Highway fuel economy

That 21 MPG estimate is kinda...neat. To be short, where is this $1300 gas guzzler tax coming from? I don't exactly drive my car in grandma mode and I'm pulling 16 - 17 MPG combined right now and probably close to 23 on the highway, usually at about 65 MPH.

Wait until it loosens up a bit, I'm getting 24 to 25 MPG at 70 MPH AND 19 combined, if I don't sit in traffic that averages 10 mph.

Mine has averaged 24mpg on long road trips. Its got the little spoiler so that likely helps a good bit vs track with the giant wall stuck to the trunk.

Im not sure,but any car that doesnt get a combined epa rating of 22.5 or higher is subject to the tax. According to the info on it, the GT350 guzzler tax should actually be much higher. Im getting 15.5 mixed driving according to the trip computer. I have not done an actual calculation yet so I suspect its actually worse than that (every single car Ive owned has always been worse)

Was that 22.5 updated in the recent years? The GT500 for instance was definitely not pulling 22.5 and didn't have a GGT.

I did a reset before a weekend trip about a month ago. I got about 22.8 mpg for the trip.
Since then my current highway/city driving has brought that down to 15.8 mpg.

It looks like the GT500s stopped being subject to it in 2011. Did they add skip-shift to it? EPA fuel economy numbers also went from 14/22 to 15/23 that year.

quick google shows the 2011 GT500 got a new aluminum block 5.4L motor, electric power steering, and some other detail changes. As far as I know Ford hasn't used a skip shift to get things done on any US car.

One thing you should note is that many fuel economy regulations don't use the window sticker numbers as those are "adjusted" from the test results.

The EPA also changes the way it tests cars and calculates fuel mileage every few years. The calculation will change slightly again for 2017, but I haven't heard that it's had any effect on the GT 350s.

2011 - 2012 Coyote cars had skip shift. It was actually kinda hard to get the car to activate though; a very lenient system. I had it tuned out regardless though. I don't think the Trinity powered cars had skip shift.

The "giant wall" doesn't affect MPG's apparently. I got 25mpg the last road trip I took driving 65-70 on the highway.

Ford has used skip shift on its manual transmissions. My 12 Boss has it, I think they got rid of it on the 13 cars, and it is disabled with the red key.

It's hugely annoying when it kicks in at random times....

I am finding the trip computer on my GT350 is around .8 high. In other words registering 25 mpg is really around 24.2 mpg. My 2011 GT 5.0 was the complete opposite.
