For those of you with navigation, how do you deal with road/ramp closures when using navigation...is there a way to manually update the navigation system?

Mine has failed on many occasions constantly routing me to a closed road.

I don't think the nav has realtime updates.
Closure will happen to any navigation systems really.
Just reroute I guess.

If it's a temporarily closed road or ramp due to construction I don't think there's any way to enter that into the system. If it's a permanent closure, sadly the only option is a new maps SD which runs $150 if I recall correctly.

In the previous Sync navigation, you could hit the voice button and then say "Detour" it would ask how many miles you wanted to detour. If you are quite near the road or ramp you can say 1 or 2 miles and then it will re route choosing different roads and ramps. Not sure if Sync 3 works the same way.

Even google maps on my phone doesn't always have the most up to date closings so you just have to work within the limitations of the system. It's only as good as the information it has access to. If you just continue on past the closure it will often re route you, though it may just want you to turn around and try again. At that point I just look at the map and do my own routing.

If it is construction causing the closures that information is fed to the Nav system via the Satellite Radio subscription (traffic, construction, and weather) which I choose not to subscribe to. So, like you, it is just lines on a map for me.

If you have the Sirius/XM Traffic package, it should update the navigation on the fly with live construction updates from Sirius via Satellite. It should take that into account when finding a route based on time, or any road closures. I know for a fact mine routed me past a road it normally would use to take me home, wasn't sure why it was doing it. Finally got to a turn I usually take and there was a big ROAD CLOSED sign on it. I had no idea but the Navigation already knew and routed around it prior to even knowing it was closed myself.

My car came with I think 5 years of the service for free if I'm not mistaken.

Even when I'm not using the navigation, if I have the Map up on my home screen, it will show yellow cone icons on roads that are currently under construction, and it seems pretty accurate.

I use navigation to manually find alternative neighborhood roads around traffic.

I use Google Maps to get me to where I need to be. Never has a car-based GPS been as good as Google Maps and it baffles me to this day why it's not the standard by now.

Correct. The SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link is free for 5 years.

Yes, I was under the impression that I have that 5 year service as well. In most cases the nav will alert of me closed lanes and accidents prior to my route and give me options on whether to ignore, avoid or detour ...Which seems to translate that it is getting live update through satelite. Hence I would imagine that if there is a road closure for at least month...The nav would have picked up that info.

It has construction updates. You have to turn those updates on and avoid those areas when prompted. It is a little cumbersome, but works ok.

bulit in nav will never be as good as google until they just use fucking google.

I just use waze for traffic updates (if I ever actually need them)
I second the waze app. It is far superior to either in-dash or portable gps with traffic subscription services. Of course, most of the time I need it I am in urban areas (LA basin, SF Bay Area) where there are lots of other users.

Waze is one of the reasons I went with a base GT. I didn't want leather, don't need heated or cooled seats, and I can use Waze for free!

Not sure why anyone even buys the navigation option...just use your smart phone. Hell the $750 for nav can buy you a new smart phone.

better resale value.

plus, I like having a map right there when I'm cruising around and want to find interesting roads.
The no nav crowd will always justify why its not worth the money. No reason to engage them really.
