So I am not sure anyone really wants another blown ecoboost thread, :frusty: but I have gotten some requests to start a post based on my experience.

Also I have seen a lot of the following.

1. I see post after post of don't gun it in 6th gear and you have nothing to worry about
2. If you go with a reputable tuner you have nothing to worry about
3. If you get a catch can you have nothing to worry about
4. If you use quality oil and 93 octane gas you have nothing to worry about.
5. Etc,etc, Mod away.

Even following all those “rules” my engine still blew up. Hard, lol

I bought the car in November 2014. It has 27,000 miles on it. Up until the failure I had zero signs anything was wrong. The car had performed perfectly. I use only 93 octane gas. I had done 3 oil changes with Amsoil Signature at 7200, 15600 and 24200 miles. I changed the spark plugs, one step colder at 15k miles. I also added a UPR single catch can at about 15k miles.

I do not beat up on the car. I use it on my daily 90 mile commute to work and around town etc. I don't race it, and rarely do I hit it over 4500-5000 rpm. I do drive spirited at time but nothing crazy, nothing I have not done to any of my other boring cars over the years. Most of my miles are boring highway miles.

Other than the catch can I have no other modifications, except springs and wheels. I did have a tune on it at various points. I had a MAP V1 & V2 from about 6k miles until about 15k miles. I went back to stock at that point to take the car in for some warranty work (the underbody heat issue). I got lazy, fall and winter came and I kept stock tune until early Feb when I installed Tune+ base tune. It was on for about a week to 10 days before the failure. I am in no way blaming the tune, I do not think it had anything to do with it. I think it could have just as easily failed if I was still on the stock tune at the time.

I was on my way to work. I was about 1 hour into my drive and about ¼ mile from work. It was low 30’s out. Car was plenty warmed up by this point. I had my accessport on me and came to a stop. I figured since it was clear I would maybe try and get a 2nd gear pull in. I had done one the previous day and sent to Adam but was not sure if it was good so figured I would do one more just in case. Big mistake. I was in sport mode. Went from 1st to 2nd, I took the corner and my foot was off the gas for a second or two as I round the corner then I gunned it. Around 4000k rpm I heard a loud noise, then a bunch of rattling, total loss of power, alarms going off, smoke pouring out of the engine and strong smell of oil. Diagnosis from the tech was the #1 rod had come loose and broke through the block (in 3 spots) and also a spark plug broke (from tech notes) It also killed the A/C, the turbo and a ton of connectors and brackets. I was right next to work so I was able to limp the car into the parking lot. Since I had my accessport, I was able to remove the tune. I did not do this to hide it, it cant be hidden, I did it because I did not want them to try installing any updates or anything over it and potentially brick the car. I think it also would have completely hosed the accessport.

Long story short the first dealership that it was towed to was a nightmare, wasted a few days and very stressful situation.

So, I called the dealership I bought it from. Explained the situation. They said have it transferred over. The next morning they already had pictures to Ford. I got a voicemail from them that night that they were waiting on what ford was going to do, because the car was modified they were not sure. The next morning I got word that ford was going to cover the fix under warranty.

I talked to Adam a little after the incident. Since I had been logging you can see exactly what was happening at the moment it blew. He said everything looked fine. The rod just gave out. Now he did say there have been some changes to the engines since it was first released, maybe he can speak more to this but here is what he wrote:

“the good thing is with your new motor you are going to get their latest revision which addresses a lot of the issues. I think the reason you got a new motor is because of the old motor design. The new has better crankcase ventilation, a different HPFP, and a different HPFP sensor. Rods are also different as well.”

My thought is this. Ford has to be aware there are issues with this engine or else I am not sure they would have covered the repair. At the same time I think the dealership involved does matter. I feel if I left it at the first dealership I would be paying out of pocket, they were useless. The 2nd dealership pushed hard for the repair and got it. They also got me a rental car which was HUGE!

Anyway not sure how I am feeling about this whole thing. I LOVE this car, so it really sucks. I was just about to get an intercooler, I had ordered adams waste gate and was about to also orders turboback exhaust and now I just do not think its worth the risk. Going forward no tune, no parts, nothing. I may do some suspension stuff and maybe a few cosmetic changes but I am focusing on paying down my loan as quick as possible in case I want to trade it in.

I am not sure how long I am going to keep it. Not sure I am going to trust the new engine, too many things could potentially go wrong now that it has been taken apart and put back together. But I will see how it goes. The dealer told me I have a 2 year unlimited mile warranty on all the work they do, so given all the miles I drive it might be worth hold on to for a little bit if it is running ok.

So far its running fine. I have about 300 miles on it since I got it back and no issues. Hoping for no issues going forward, maybe an 18 GT is in my future :D.

Hoping Ford figures it all out and the newer models have worked out the bugs. Mine was one of the early ones off the line with a sept build date(2014). Honestly I am sure 99% of these cars are fine, I just drew the short straw. There are so many things I love about this platform that I really hope it succeeds. But it should give people a little pause as this could have been a very expensive lesson so make sure you are prepared for the worst if you start modding your car.

First I've heard of this, would love to hear more details on this. Specifically on the different HPFP, HPFP sensor, and Rods.

I'm extremely shocked to read it was covered under warranty especially knowing the car was modified and the ecu was flashed . Anyway good to hear that , saved you a few grand easily in parts and labor

I'm glad to hear it was covered too. I'm definitely interested in knowing more about what Ford has upgraded on these cars. That's the first I've heard of it as well.

Lol and no I'm even more worried about mine after driving it today...

No clue what the hell it's doing but it's worrisome... happens in D and S doesn't matter what drive mode it's in...higher rpms it starts "dragging" if that makes any sense.

I'm curious to know when these changes mentioned were implemented. I bought mine in April of 2015.

There is always a risk when you tune your car. Even if this was not the cause of the failure it is still a risk you take when you decide to go that route. Glad you had it repaired under warranty.

Seems to me the upgraded parts tell the whole story, I'm sure they where upgraded due to blown engines showing up at dealerships on quite a few occasions. I wonder how this will pan out as far as ford recalling these earlier cars with potential defects to upgrade, if at all.

I'm just curious if there is any specific reason that these specific engines are letting go. We know about some of the issues of course, but then there are just random ones like this.
