Hey guys

So recently I noticed that it seems like the cooling fans are running all the time on my car. Like as soon as I turn the car on I can hear the fan noise; even though its like 30 degrees outside

is that normal?

thanks

Doesn't sound normal to me... contact your dealer.

Are you tuned by any chance?

Ok how about this one. I have the heat on set at 70 and there is cold air coming from the defrost. I am bald and can feel it on my head. Heat coming out the floor and cold air coming out of the defrost.

You sure its cold air or just air got cold after hitting the windshield?

Nope, my a/c has actually not been blowing cold lately, I wonder if they could be related?
Hummm, did you try to turn it all the way up to see if they heat up at all?

Nope it's cold air I put my hand on the defrost vents the first time I felt it. I keep forgetting to say something to the dealership when I take it in for something else.

IIRC anytime a newer vehicle is set to "defrost" (front), the A/C compressor is part of that function and as such, if equipped with electric fans, the fans will kick on with defrost mode (even when you have actual interior temps sets to "hot").

The fans are controlled by the computer, but anytime the front defrost is used the fan operation resorts to another or secondary programming mode because when A/C compressor is used, because it's a load on the engine - doesn't matter what outside temps are at the time.

Someone else with better tech info can probably add more to this thread.

That is correct that the cooling fan will come on whenever the defroster is on, and it is also correct that the fan is controlled by the PCM.

However, the primary purpose of the cooling fan coming on is not for engine cooling, but instead it is to pull air through the condenser. When the vehicle is at a stop or at low speeds, the fan pulls air through the condenser in order to allow it to function. The condenser cools compressed refrigerant gas by allowing air to pass over fins and tubes to extract heat, and condenses gas to liquid refrigerant as it is cooled.

Therefore, if the climate control is set to defrost, it will be normal for the cooling fan to run.

^^^ Agree with post #10 and 11. OP, make sure your defrost and A/C settings are off.

Well I figured out the solutions to my problems for both the fans always being on as well as my a/c being hot. Turns out my car had a leak in the Freon line and had no Freon left in the system. Dealer also stated the fans were on all the time in an effort to correct for the lack of Freon. AC now works cold after they repaired the line and refilled Freon, as well as the fans being off.

Freon leak in a car with 8k miles, gotta love the quality of these things.

A refrigerant leak can happen to ANY car.

Amazing how people jump to conclusions about "quality" when they are the single one out of tens of thousands of vehicles to experience a specific issue; that's the nature of mass produced products, and also the reason you have a warranty.

The dealer found the issue and repaired it under warranty at no charge to you, just as promised by the manufacturer. Stop complaining.

Gotta love the inconvenience of having your brand new car in service before 10,000 miles! Don't worry your personal time and transportation needs that isn't important! I love the username BTW!
