Front Fog Lights & Curious

I noticed this last weekend but didn't really pay much attention at the time until this evening.

This evening i changed my sidelight bulbs to LED, simply because i couldn't bear to see that warm orange glow from the filament bulb next to the white crisp headlights blar blar blar...

On testing the sidelights i noticed that if you turn the lighting dial to "0" i.e. lights off, it automatically turn on the front fog lights, even when driving. Now, regardless that these may be classed as "driving lamps" in the handbook, i am wondering what the fuzz's take would be if you came across an over enthusiastic cop? In my younger day when i thought it was cool to drive on sidelights and fogs, i actually got pulled and fined, so was wondering on others thoughts?

As an off topic comment, i also noticed that our sidelights are ass about face compared to the US versions. On the Euro cars, the sidelights are on the inner side of the indicators and the US versions are on the outside of the indicator (just a anal observation )

I'm interested in this as well as the so called DRLs are very faint and as good as useless whilst all the other new cars have all sorts of weird patterns and shapes and are blinding.

There are actually 2 bulbs in each foglight assembly. One is the actual fog light and the other is the export DRL.

They do look utterly stupid indeed. At the stickies you will find an extensive topic on how to get rid of them and install proper US spec drls.

Hmmmm, so are we saying the "fog lights / driving lights" are our DRL's? If so, it is an interesting subject and wonder which one of us with an S550 will be the first to be pulled by a clueless cop...

As you rightly say, there are all sorts of wierd shapes in headlights and so on...

I already got rid of them!

Now running led fogs and parking lights. So I just drive with headlights on always like a Volvo, haha. ;)

Well I've learnt something new and glad i posted... There are in deed 2 lamps in the "fog light" assembly...

Bugger, back on the interweb for more LED shopping to swap the lower lamps out... At least sidelights and DRL's will match, but it doesn't take away the fact that the stock lights aren't true DRL's as all modern cars these days! :kickrock:

I didn't realise the fog lamps were the drl's until I read this, and then I realised that I hadn't really driven at night... So I popped out, checked it and was surprised to find it was true! I thought the sidelamps were the drl's.

I live on the outskirts of Fareham so went for a short country drive to check the lights out and they seem fine on that short run, the main beam seems to go quite "high" which surprised me. I will have to check night motorway/longer distance driving.next week...

Pls can some one explain why the switchback LED dual Indicators / side lights don't work for our UK Mustangs. ..resulting in the 'easy option of just replacing the side light bulbs with LED ..and maybe Fog / DRL with leds .

The switchbacks look like a nice solution and work for the US car

Apparently there is a solution on it's way from HD- Customs (Poland) in a few weeks.

I'm based on the outskirts of Fareham (ish) at the moment until Saturday. Here's hoping I'll catch a glimpse of another stang. Been up and down the country and have yet to see another.

Just looked in the handbook and its says the DRL's are P13W but it also says the lamp can't be removed from the holder. Had a look on Fleabay and a P13W looks as though it comes with a fixed base but not sure if the Ford connection / plug is the same arrangement, how did you get on with them blar blar blar?

Yup , that thread made me LOL (alot).
Angle grinder is good to go .......seems a bit over the top though .

Hopefully Ian can advise on the switchback issue without using the oven or the dremmel .

Mine won't be moving for a few days - I am away for a long weekend and then it goes to get detailed on Monday, but it will start to be a lot more mobile afterwards!

I am intending to go to Cams Hall on Sunday 7th February for the Mocgb meet... All shiny!
