If you're really scared about your warranty don't mod. Especially if you can't pay for repairs/replacements. If you do quality mods and get quality tuning it's unlikely that you'll blow your engine unless it's already defective from the factory. No guts no glory

I told the dealer I'll be installing a different turbo so don't bother with the extended warranty pitch. Lol. As others said if you are concerned don't mod it. If you do be sure you are at least comfortable swapping back to stock for stealership work or get in good with the service guys.

I tell everyone who asks this same question the same thing.

I highly recommend to not modify your car if it's your only mode of transportation and if you don't have 5-10k in cash to pay for a new engine block and everything else involved.

Just do simple things like an exhaust and intake; its highly doubtful a dealer is going to deny a warranty over those since they have to prove that caused the malfunction.

Just don't get a tune...

Agree. I'm in the same boat so I just did intake, exhaust, Tune+ plugs, springs, brakes, and visual stuff, get the point? Everything is removable. Even doing alignment at custom shop so its not on paper for the dealer. If you are going to mod on warranty then EVERYTHING has to have the ability to come off. If car f's up while your out, have it towed to your house, put all the stock stuff on and then tow it to the dealership. Might be a PITA but how much is not voiding your warranty worth to you?

getting a tune does not = automatic void of your warranty; but is for sure more risky in case something happens so I do agree with you. So its up to the owner to determine if its worth the risk.... my dealership has other customers tune their car and is fine with it... Some tuners like adam can actually make the car even safer and run more optimally with a quality tune that is tailored to where you live, fuel quality, temps, bolts on etc. ... so really up to you to decide if that risk is worth it ....

It's all dependent on the dealership. My suggestion is to build a repore with the sales guy when you go in and buy. Pick his brain and ask how they treat other customers with modded cars, what has he seen is the issues. I did that, and I have already had my car through the dealership 3 times, with an aftermarket FMIC,,with springs and a catch can. There's not one definitive way a ford dealership will or won't treat you. Do the homework, plenty of guys running 18k plus with tunes who have been to dealers and flashed back with no issues. No reason to go to the extremes if it's not needed.

When it comes down to it, there is only one answer and it is very simple:


Dont do anything to the car that you cant/wont remove before you bring it in for service. You can change wheels, you can change springs, floor mats, window tint, license plate frame. The further you go the more things you could 'potentially' be affecting.


Lets say you did a bunch of suspension bushings, but your car has developed a vibration. Sure, it could be a legitimate driveline vibration, but more than likely are going to blame the mods you have done.

I bought my EB with the intention of tuning it right out of the box (at least until I shook the motor down). Now - no, not a chance. Its going to see the bulk of its warranty run through before a tune, intercooler, or downpipe. Could you do a catback? Sure - but would you remove it before taking it in for warranty work (assuming its engine/trans related).

I am however doing springs and wheels because I can stomach paying for some upper mounts out of pocket if i had to - I cant justify a new bottom end or transmission.

If you can justify dropping $5k for a new motor if yours blows up in some freak scenario - fine, more power to you. But Im going to guess that $5k isnt just sitting in savings for a scenario like that, hence this thread.

I have a catted downpipe and all the mods I posted before and my turbo was replaced 100% under warranty. I even had a vibrating issue after I installed steeda springs myself, dealer looked at it and noticed one of the rosters wasn't tightened down enough. Nothing out of pocket!! In fact I have an appointment in the morning. My check engine light is on after the turbo replace and I'm going to the dealer with all my mods, minus my tune. I wil post my experience and work invoice so we can spread the word around these things your talking about are not always the case. It's ok to be cautious, but at least know it's open to interpretation rather than fact. Dealers know people mod the cars and they aren't always out to screw you over. My point is, some of us have had positive experiences and I just want to know it exists. I also acknowledge that someone can have a bad experience, but I'm going off the facts of mine and not just what ifs. Good luck to all and sons of these vendors have been great to work with. You could at least tune it! Get a programmer and a custom tune and just flash back to stock before you go in and they would never know. I had a ST with meth and stage 3 and brought it in and got some stuff fixed under warranty. Some dealers will let you slide with it.:shrug:
