That's actually pretty impressive for such a huge engine. There's something to be said for forced induction and how it's so good for MPG.

2001 cobra 4.6l 4v dohc. Cold air and 4.10 gears, 5 speed. I do right at 50% in town and 50% highway and average 20. Like 18 if mostly city and around 22 if mostly highway. My city mpg actually went up with the 4.10s with only a slight drop on highway making for a slight bump overall after the change (from 3.27s)
