Hey all,

Yes, I know this subject has been brought up numerous times. I've read through a few threads so far to understand what the most common issues are when this message pops up. I recently (on Friday) had my Borla aftermarket catback exhaust installed from a local shop, and shortly (within a couple minutes) thereafter this message popped up. They're going to look at it on Monday (tomorrow) by taking it all apart and placing it back together, but disappointing nonetheless.

So what I see is happening, is when the car is off, the valves are wide open and that's the way the car actually starts up too. I swear to God I woke up the dead it was so loud. However, I can't actually switch the valves into a different position. The onboard toggle display says I'm switching, but it's not. Within about 60 seconds or so, the message pops up on my display and then locks it into "normal" mode. Truly unsure what's causing that but I at least want to be able to troubleshoot. I know, I know, that's the mechanics job.

After looking at a couple of install videos, and reading the instructions from the Borla site itself, I realized my mechanic said he just slapped on the mufflers/tailpipes and didn't notate which position the valves themselves were in. However, from the manual it says the valves have to be open before installing the actuators. And I also see some notes about making sure the springs are in the correct position when installing the actuators.

Does anyone have any insight on whether the position of the valves when installing would cause this error? Or, if more times than not, it's a spring-related issue?

I truly appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!

My friend your concern is not new. It is identical to one that I saw and helped with about 1 year ago. I will try to find the thread for you.

I did my own Borla ATAK type cat back and had 0 issues. I got lots of help from this forum.

your issue is gonna lie with either the valve positioning or loose wiring harness/pigtail located around the assembly.

The shop will find it. I will edit this in a min with helpful posts.

Both of the posts quoted above may be helpful ..Also remind the shop to retape the pigtail/harness and zip tie them to prevent them from hanging. I’ve had my Borla installed for a year and have never had the exhaust mode message come up.

Hemistar1,

Thank you so much for your help. I didn't mean to clutter the forum, but after looking at so many threads sometimes the words just merge together at a point.

I'll update this thread at some point tomorrow afternoon.

So mechanic called me regarding this install, now presents another issue. He went through and checked the wiring. All good there

took mufflers off and reinstalled actuators with valves open. Made sure springs were placed properly and put it together.

so the new issue is even after reinstalling it and going through the modes, which are confirmed working, Track mode doesn’t function. Normal, quiet, and sport work and remain functioning even after a few mins. However, as soon as track is selected a message pops up saying track mode not available see owners manual. And then it locks to sport mode.

any ideas or insight?

edit: I saw in the first thread a member had the same issue but he never responded to a user who offered a solution.

Hmm, so I went by the mechanic's shop today to take a look at the remaining issue. Seems the passenger side valve isn't opening all the way when track mode is enabled.

Mechanic seemed super frustrated with it all to be honest. I told him I'd give him one more opportunity to fix the alignment/spring/actuator issue and then I'll have to take it to the dealership. This, of course, would be after a refund from him.

He didn't seem too offended by that idea. But I explained how pathetically sensitive the spring can be as far as falling out while screwing the bolts in the actuator. He'll let me know by tomorrow morning.

Car was fixed at dealership. Ultimately, the passenger actuator was damaged during installation from the shop I took it to. Had to replace the actuator and is now running as intended.
