Hi All,

We are after a GT Vert, and supply has pretty much dried up. There is pre facelift 2018 for sale in a colour we like which we are considering. Would this be a good move? It's a fair bit cheaper than the post facelift models.

Two areas I could do with help with...

Was the RHD oil cooler issue fixed pre facelift?

Is the 6 speed gearbox OK? The car will be used as a relaxed cruiser, not a performance car.

Any advice / general comments much appreciated

Well I'm sure I will get flamed but the 6 speed 6R80 auto was a bit of a clunker. The facelift cars get the 10R80 10 speed auto which I personally have and love. The 10R80 also helps with performance (faster than the manual) and economy. I have averaged 29.6mpg over 6k miles with a fair but of high speed motorway work in France which isn't to be sniffed at for 5.0 V8. At 80mph in 10th it is only just over 2k rpm.

Check the roof carefully for damage which was a known problem on earlier cars where they chafe. Later cars were modified. Always check for signs of water leaks.

The soft top is more of a cruiser than the coupe as it lacks a degree of rigidity as virtually all soft tops do. To be fair the Mustang is a GT car not a proper sports car (wait for more flaming) but that is why I bought mine, as it is fast, comfortable and great for long journeys. It also has a big boot which was important for me.

Facelift cars add quite a lot of kit here in the UK as well as the option of Magneride which if you can find it is worth it.

Go drive it !!

Not so quick!
Most of those comments seem to be spot on.
Although, I'd question the efficacy & expense of going for Magneride on a vert.

In my experience, Ford did just about enough to the MY18 onwards, to make it a valid update of the 15-17, just!
However, I'd expect the price drop tween a MR vert & a non-MR vert would be a good cost save.

I'd suggest an MY18 onwards vert, without MR would be my choice.

@JamesLafayette
Best of luck & Pictures, when you obtain your vert!

Thanks @Supersolo That sound like a good call. I'm not sure to wait for a used one to come up or order a new one for spring/summer. There are basically none available on the used market :-(

Thanks @Gregs24 , unfortunately some of those are manual, and I don't really fancy a supercharged one. I think the car in NI sold weeks ago, I phoned them twice and they just said 'I think it's sold'. It's weird it's still there as they had a red one which they have taken down.

I don't think the oil cooler issue was fixed, from what I read it still has the same part number, although I haven't heard anyone have the issue for a while. Be interesting to see how Ford handles the fault after the warranty expires.

It's not possible to say if the oil cooler issue or ac evap issue were fixed because Ford won't say what the problems were. If they slipped in solutions they also aren't saying. The only effective counter to the oil cooler issue is to fit an aftermarket unit like the Harrop.

Neither issue appears to have arisen with the 18+ ie FN.

For what it’s worth - I’ve been delighted with my pre-facelift GT 6 speed auto (albeit a fastback). Never felt the need for an adjustable ride or 4 more forward gears to chose from. Suggest you have a drive in both before making your purchase.

I think it really depends what you have come from. Ive had BMW autos/DCT's over the last 10 years but both 6 and 10 speed Ford offerings in my opinion aren't particularly great, the 6 speed auto i had in a hire car GT was very average, still loved the car though whereas the 10 speed while quick to change and far more suited to the GT again to me was way behind the ZF auto's in how it behaved.

Personally I would go for the 10 speed auto if i desperately wanted an auto BUT for me the manual is the one to have, its a really nice box IMO far better than any BMW M car manual ive driven.

One way to look at it is ask yourself what you want from the car. If it's just performance you could spend a modest amount of coin getting the 2017 to handle at least as well as a 2018 (Bilsteins, springs and some rear suspension subframe help) and throw in a tune and cat-back exhaust to easily get it to the same power and sound. The tick and the rattle you're probably going to get with an 18 may or may not be something that you can live with.

Interior is pretty much identical other than the 18 gets some soft touch trim, different steering wheel trim and digi dash. The front facia on the 18 can be polarising.
