I do remember people trying to trade for MREs (and components) that they liked better. Some people would announce themselves to be vegetarians right before an exercise, because they thought the vegetarian MREs tasted better.
...And if there was anything that was bad for you because it was full of preservatives and other weird chemicals, MREs were it.

I have also tried Impossible burgers that I smoked on my grille. An unusual but not unpleasant flavor and texture. We smoke a lot of stuff on the grille.
