I know that sounds absurd, but Bayer (Monsanto) just settled a class action lawsuit whereby... "Individuals, depending on the strength of their cases, will receive payments of $5,000 to $250,000, according to two people involved in the negotiations." (link) These are people that have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Really?
Even $250k. Forget it. The US Dept. of Transportation (DOT), in 2016, computed the "Economic Value of a Statistical Life" at $9.6m. (pdf link)
Even if the attorneys got 50%, that would mean people were only offered $500k.
Granted not all cases are going to be "slam dunk" as a weekend gardener that gets NHL yet also works at a chemical plant is far from a straight cause-and-effect. But still, $5k?
All I can say is wow.
