So this past saturday was one of the worst days I have personally had.... Ever.....

Got up early as my normal insomnia was going strong as usual. So i decided to run and grab a coffee at about 645- 7am.... right as the sun was coming up.

Get about halfway to my destination. And i feel a sneeze coming on, hits me quick..... and as my son will attest to, "its scary when dad sneezes"
End up having a sneezing fit and to save everyone too much reading/ detail...... I end up being 'the cause' of my first 'fender bender/ accident"
Rear ended a toyota carolla that was stopped at the light, and I was slowing down but going about 15-20mph when I hit.

I was/ am so upset with myself.
Ive been driving for 22 years now, and this my first accident where I am at fault.

After looking at the damage.... (and wanting to hurl just from how my beautiful Mustang looked because I couldnt stop sneezing)
I thought it didnt look all that bad, Insurance will fix 'er up, ill pay my deductible.....
And honestly.... i wanted to get a new front bumper anyway.... albiet a different one...

Here is mainly why I am posting this.... kus i normally would not show the world my misfortne......

the Collision center that State Farm reccomended, calls me today. and tells me that I hit in just the right (or more like wrong) spot..... for it to bend the frame rails back. So they are asking State Farm to approve marking it as a total loss.

Mind you. Only one single air bag deployed..... the one for the drivers knees.

State Farm has not yet approved this. Or contacted me at all.
I think they are wanting to find a way to avoid sending me a check.

And really.
I want my MUSTANG BACK!!!!!

Anyone ever experienced the issue with the frame rails after an accident?

Now I am on the hunt for another S550..... If i can afford it with the prices currently......

Ill just take going back in time honestly to where this never happened, and I can have my 5.0 back and I will be happy.

Ouch! Sorry for your loss. Hope everyone’s okay.
In my experience, you still have an option of taking your car somewhere else for a second opinion/estimate. Not all shops evaluate the damage and cost the same. If the car felt sound driving (except for rattles), repairing it might be a better financial decision. When an insurance company totals a car it can become a real battle for value. It’s a big game.
My son has an older BMW 330. He got hit on the side; minor dents. They wanted to total it and offered $5k for the payout. After MUCH negotiation, I got them to value it at $8k which allowed us to get it repaired. Got it repaired for $3k and we came out just fine.
The point being is that you have more control over decisions than the insurance company leads you to believe. Just like a medical diagnosis, get a second opinion. Good luck!

Hello; Modern car designs have moved from light collision survivability to defined crumple zones. Been that way for some time. It is a tradeoff between damage to the car and protection of occupants. The great majority of us have accepted the trade off as acceptable. Our street cars are not sturdy the way a NASCAR race car is. A NASCAR chassis can hold up to sever abuse and be in the next race with fenders and such put back.

Likely you car is toast. If it is totaled you may have the option to demand to keep the car if you accept a reduced settlement from the insurance company. That way you could have the damaged straightened and the sheet metal replaced. Such is done. There are some unpleasant side effects. The wreck is officially on record. Depending on the Texas state laws you could wind up a branded title. For sure the accident will always be associated with the VIN # and show up on any search.
Even if you are among the lucky and find a competent shop which does the work correctly the retail value of the car will take a hit

Twenty some years ago my F-150 was hit in the rear hard enough to snap an axel. I had the truck towed to my property while I negotiated with the insurance of the driver which hit me. A guy I knew made me a cash offer for the wreck so I told the insurance I would take a reduced settlement. He put a used rear end under the truck and a used bed. The truck had a full frame which he straightened. Then he painted it. That wreck is how I became stuck with a Chevy pickup as i needed a truck right away.

Last thoughts. You say the collision was 15-20 MPH. That is plenty fast enough to have had passenger injury. The car protected you family and did its job. The other thought is there is more than body & frame damage. lots of sensors in the new cars. If the air bags deployed such is another level of expensive repair. Then programing the computers. Try to not make a rash emotional decision.
bend the frame rails back
one single air bag deployed.
Now I am on the hunt for another S550..... If i can afford it with the prices currently......
Hello; 2019 is the model year when I attempted to buy a GT. Got a good price on a base GT that was a "last years" model. Was to be out the door for around $30 K. It was around 250 miles away. Two things screwed the deal. I took a certified check to pay for the car at a dealer in Ohio. During the paperwork they insisted on my SS#. I refused as I was not financing and showed them the check they had insisted on as I live in TN. So i walked that day.
Found the SS# was an Ohio state rule so tried to get back, but a friend bailed on helping me with a ride. Point being that was the last decent deal I made. After that time and Covid, prices have been nuts. I do not see a base GT going for less than $48K OTD.

Just so you don’t beat yourself up too badly, I want to share a story that will make you feel better.
In 1978, my best friend had just bought a Mustang II Cobra. Yes, historically it was a piece of crap, but in 1978 that’s what you could get. Anyway, he needed to take it back to the dealership to have some minor warranty work done and he asked me to follow him down and give him a ride home. Easy, right?
Well, we came to a stop sign to turn right, he stopped and then proceeded.
I looked then proceeded as well. Unfortunately, I didn’t see that his car had stalled and stopped. Yes, I rear ended him! Took out all of his taillights and beyond. I was so embarrassed, and he was so pissed. We laughed about it later but in the moment, yikes!
I haven’t thought about that brain-fart in a long time.

Don’t feel too bad OP. One of my claims customer sneezed and drove up on the sidewalk and hit an elderly pedestrian, causing severe leg injuries. It could’ve been worse for you. Maybe you need allergy pills or something. I find it kind of alarming that somebody can’t control their car when they sneeze.

Sorry to hear. Accidents do happen but since it caused an accident and likely totaled your car, I hope that you learned from it and do things differently in the future. Very happy you and your family are safe after this. The car sacrificed itself for your protection, it did what it was designed to do.
If you know your sneezes are uncontrollable and violent.. why are you not trying to pull over to the side of the road when you feel the urge coming on or slowing down with your hazard lights on? Sounds like those sneezes are prone to take your eyes off the road.

Because then he'd have to take his eyes off his phone.

LOL at the people getting on the OP about his sneezing. You do know it’s physically impossible to keep your eyes open while sneezing, right??? Like, it’s a human body thing that cannot be overridden. Cut the guy some slack, stuff happens. As an allergy sufferer (yes I take allergy pills), I get where OP is coming from.

OP, sorry about your car. It sucks. As far as it being totaled, you may have the option in your state to buy it back (here in IL you cannot) so maybe explore that route. Don’t take the first offer from the insurance company as far as payout. Find comparable cars for sale and use that to help establish value.

Maybe try to take it to a second State Farm approved shop to see what they say...

So sorry you crumpled the car, car is replaceable, hoping the fam is ok? I know exactly what you are going through in the way of sneezing fits and being uncrtollable. Mine are so violent and usually 3 of them, it's actually pathetic. LOL. I feel for you man.

For those of you that do not understand, maybe here's a test for you, get your significant other to tickle your nose with a feather, (or some other means of making a sneeze happen), and while driving too, so it brings a sneeze on, and see how it goes.

Cut the guy some slack,

Tell the insurance company you need a rental car. Eventually during negotiations they will get tired of making that payment and use that as leverage for a better settlement.

I'm in the collision repair industry. Almost every vehicle in my shop that is deemed a total loss by an insurance company is "Physically repairable" if the replacement parts are still available. The reason vehicles total out is repair cost compared to vehicle value. Most insurance companies will start with a low offer. You can dispute the offer if you are prepared with comparable vehicle values and documentation of any major mods or maintenance receipts. Another way to up the value is to dispute the condition rating. The higher the vehicle is valued, the more it will justify the cost of a proper repair. If it still doesn't pencil out, you may still get a higher settlement on the total loss.
I do not recommend retaining it if it does end up totaled. There are title and resale issues and may actually cost you more in the long term.
Good luck!

Oy, so very very sorry that this happened to your beautiful car
I would also be beside myself in you know what
This really sucks, and although in well over half a century of driving I've only had one accident (similar, only worse) it's agonizingly painful
I hope you get a good result in the long run
Hard to believe that car would be totaled
