Ok, so I'm trying to find a definitive answer about the rear panel between the tail lights. Please forgive my ignorance as I was a long time Camaro guy and we just bought our first Mustang, so Im learning a lot in a short amount of time. Anyhow, our car has a gloss black rear panel. I see the majority of Grabber Blue cars have a black panel in the rear, but some are body color. Same with other paint colors as well, but the black seems very prevalent with the Grabber Blue cars. Is this a stock item, or were they all made with body color panels and we just have an aftermarket panel back there? ChatGPT insisted that all S550 cars come with body color panels (other than special editions), but I see sooooo many cars with black panels I find it hard to believe they were all swapped out after the fact.

They were all black from the factory on S550's. The S650's (2024+) have body color panels.

A company used to sell pre-painted ones. Or the owner could opt to have their black one painted to match body.

S550 generations (2015 - 2023) are all black panels.

There are some mods our there where you can get a body colored deck lid panel. This one is modded and not stock.

The newer S650 generation (2024+) is stock body colored deck lid.

This might be a clue to stop using ChatGPT because it was absolutely incorrect when you asked it a direct question.

What exact words did you use? Mercedes has an S550 so unless you stated "Mustang" that might be the issue. If you did just another reason, I'll not use any of the so-called AI.

So... here is the exact prompt I used...

What designates a black rear panel on the S550 Mustang? Ours has it, but my wife just saw two other cars on her way home. Both convertibles, one was an Ecoboost (pony badge) and one was a GT. Neither had a black panel between the tail lights. Is that exclusive to Premium package or something else?

The reply it gave was actually correct at first, then instantly devolved, and it's partially my own fault because I gave it misinformation. Turns out the two cars she saw were both S650's and I mistook them as S550 because I dont know any better from a small cell phone photo taken from behind the cars in traffic.

Short answer: the black panel on your S550 Mustang between the taillights isn’t tied to a specific trim like Premium or GT at the factory — it’s just the standard rear decklid panel on many S550s, and most of the time it’s just body‑colored or painted rather than a standout black accent. Mustang6G

So, it actually referenced the forum here for the info, stupid me didnt bother clicking the link. And it literally contradicted itself within the same sentence, which then dug me deeper into the hole trying to clarify what specifically was the correct answer. If the topic is something I know a bit about, Im usually good at finding the AI slop answers and reading between the lines so to speak. However, since Im very new to the Mustang universe, Im not positive on what's factual and what is a hallucination.

In certain circumstances, ChatGPT and Gemini can be very useful and helpful, and in other times, they can spit out a bunch of false info. I take everything with a grain of salt, hence why I came in here to ask what the real answer was. I find both are really good at summarizing large chunks of information, like asking if a tire brand has generally bad reviews or why is Windows acting wonky after launching a game.

FYI:
I applied PPF to my rear panel and it was a game changer for avoiding scratches on that piano black surface...
