Look up your car on TireRack.com. I spoke with their customer service because of some discrepancies between their recommendation about fit and the rim manufacturer's recommendations. He described their process and they are very judicious about ensuring that their "will it fit my car" recommendations are correct. If they don't show 17" as available for your car, then they will not fit. You will also need to know what the setback is on the rims you consider purchasing.
My GT came with 19" and I switched to the 18" narrower and taller for winter tires. One important consideration, in addition to the rim size and setback, is to get the outer diameter/circumference of the two different tire sizes to be the same or it will mess up your speedometer. There are tire size vs circumference calculators on the internet. And I believe that TireRack.com has a fairly decent rim buying guide.
For the 2016 model year, both the GT and EcoBoost came with 18" minimum rims. The clearance between the brake calipers and the 18" rims is very small, no way a 17" rim would fit that model year. I don't know if they changed for the 2018 MY. Do they have specific brake calipers for the EcoBoost vs GT? If not, they you can't go less than the GT anyway.
