I cracked my windshield today. Got stuck in rush hour traffic getting food for the family, was maintaining very decent following distances from the cars in front, but still a %^& semi in the lane next to me kicks up a small rock and hits the corner of the windshield.

I looked at the damage after I got home- the rock was so small it only scuffed the top coating of the glass, but it caused a large stress fracture ~6" in length.

Has anyone had experience with Ford and warranty claims for something like this? I could see it going either way- clearly the rock was the instigating factor, but I've never seen that bad of a crack from that little damage in my 20+ years driving. The glass absolutely had underlying flaws. Also any estimates on replacement cost would be appreciated, though I'll figure that out later I'm sure.....

Edit to say that I've had the car less than 4 months under 5k miles

Not a warranty claim. You'll have to go through your insurance to get it replaced.

Insurance should cover it 100%. They will get pissy if you keep having claims but here in FL the shit on the interstate is ridiculous with rocks. I went through 3 claims in 2 years on 2 cars, unavoidable. Also some of this seamless glass is really shit too. My 2015 outback (only has 80k miles) had 3 replacements itself esp if hit in the corner and this doesn’t count one I fixed myself with filler.

Just had windshield replaced on my GT350R. Was handled thru my insurance company, however Ford dealer gave me recommendation for installer and they used OEM glass windshield.

No, it didn't. I've had major hits that barely chipped the glass. Minor hits that destroyed them. It depends on the angle and the shape of the rock/stone/whatever. Regardless forget about warranty, just do what others have said and go to your insurance company.

I avoid driving next to semi's at all costs on the freeway...already too many chips :( guess it's time to take to the track and really chip it up.

Oh yea I hear you. I only have two major chips, and both came from large commercial vehicles located in an adjacent lane.

Rush hour is soul crushing because there is literally nothing I can do about it. I think I might have a lead on a beat to shit civic I can get cheap, and I'll probably use that for my commuter on days where I don't have time flexibility to avoid rush hour.....

I roll a 2000 Civic LX auto, slow reliable, and superb steering for the commute and errands. I got it about 3 months after the M1. Do it!

Makes me appreciate the M1 more when I drive it, and I tend to drive the M1 harder on the occasions that I use it now leading to more enjoyment.
