Hi there

Heard a few people mention buying trackers from Ebay for their Mustang. I've typed in car tracker into Ebay and just blasted by 100's of results:

So what trackers have you guys purchased? In a perfect world would be awesome to find a wireless tracker which I can hide somewhere in the car which gives of a GPS signal which I can track using an APP on my phone? Any such thing exist?

Trackers seem to increase insurance premiums, dont get that but seems to be the way with brokers i've spoken to.

Dashcams on the other hand seem to be offering about a 10% discount

Yes, there's quite a large thread on them over in the american side of the forum.
I'm gonna get a Thinkware F750 & hardwire it, seemed to be the camera of choice and pretty advanced.

+1, though knowing where the car actually was when it was supposed to be at the dealer for service would be useful.

For the dashcam I currently have a Mobius. Haven't installed it in my car as yet. Relatively inexpensive but lacking in features such as an inbuilt screen or GPS.

Yep - been through that thread too and came to the same conclusion. I'll be getting this one and hardwiring it too

Maybe installing a tracker tells the insurance company you're expecting the car to get nicked?

Many of the trackers available on eBay all look similar and some may be knock-offs so I ordered from Amazon so that I had a little more comeback but I think the supplier I ordered from sells on Amazon, eBay and their own website.

I ordered Amazon REWIRE SECURITY TK102 NANO MAGNETIC VEHICLE & PERSONAL GPS TRACKER TK102B by REWIRE SECURITY.

I have been road testing my tracker in my Focus (so I know it works with Fords) and it is located on the centre console powered by USB and it seems to work well enough.

It was a little tricky at first to get working. One problem was that the Lyca Mobile SIM did not have any credit and you need to set up the tracker by sending it txt messages and it replies with txt messages. Each txt message costs 10p so you want to keep these to a minimum. The tracker I ordered was cheaper than the regular package which may be why the SIM did not have any credit.

You don’t need to purchase a data bundle from Lyca Mobile because the tracker only uses a few bytes for each update and so far the initial £25.00 top up has lasted 5 months whereas a data bundle would have un-needed unlimited data which would then expire after 1 month.

Rewire Security have a tracker website and I also use the Android app which is pretty good once you find your way around. There is a choice of maps such as Google and Ordinance Survey. Both website and app will update in real time. One annoyance is that the website and app does not remember usernames and passwords so having to re-enter each time is a bit of a pain.

The tracker works really well and I have it set to update every 10 seconds and it is surprising how far you can travel in 10 seconds such as going through a roundabout and the tracker cuts the corner off. Sometimes it does seem to stop tracking for a short while and the track then jumps a few miles. Even at updates every 10 seconds the first £25.00 top up has lasted months.

It is important to update every 10 seconds in case the last place where the vehicle is parked does not gave GPS or a mobile signal and if the update interval was longer then the location radius could be more than a mile.

The tracker doers not send updates when the vehicle is stationary/parked and it seems to go into a power saving mode if it is stationary and I have noticed that it does take a few minutes to wake up so the first few miles of a journey can be missing but it has never failed to record the final destination of the vehicle.

Some users of these forums have reported that having a tracker was a condition of their insurance but I haven’t been able to find out if any specific tracker model is required and how it should be installed. A colleague of mine who comes from South Africa says that trackers are common and are also a requirement for anti-kidnapping security and that the tracker is installed in a secret location on the vehicle but it is nearly always welded into a metal box under the passenger seat.

If insurance companies charge extra for trackers then I don’t see any reason to inform them of a DIY installation as it is just a gadget used inside the vehicle and is not a change to the vehicle specification.

I separately ordered a hardwire kit from Rewire Security but I haven’t installed it yet because obviously my Mustang has not arrived yet. I hope to install the tacker inside the roof lining possibly near the sunglasses holder and it will use the hardware kit powered using piggyback fuse in the fuse box so the whole installation can be removed without trace.
