It does not need to be completely empty. It almost sounds like your fuel bucket (around the pumps) was full and it overflowed as you lifted it up. Take the pump out slowly and tilt it so any fuel in the bucket empties into the tank. Also note that the fuel level sensor makes a 90* bend off the fuel bucket, this will require you to tilt the pump as you pull it out of the tank to avoid damaging it.I hear the smaller pump in the engine bay. I don't hear anything from the pump in the gas tank while priming
I found a fuel pump. But now having problems with the install. When I removed the metal ring holding the fuel pump unit down fuel came gushing up. I'm not sure why bc I only have 5 gallons in the tank. Does it need to be completely empty to change the pump?
