Cable I’ve never noticed in any other car attached to my OBD II port. Fell down while I was driving.

Looks like a Geo tracker used in fleet cars.

Used to be a Hertz car. Can I remove it?
Yes, unplug it from the OBD II port and remove the tracker harness. There will be another box hidden in the dash, maybe zip tied to the steering column support.

Found it. The wire on the other hand is pinned into the obd port as well as being connected to the smart data link adapter

Is that how they know if you beat the piss out of the car when you rent it?

I'm surprised that Hertz does not remove those - because it cost then money for those units.... and they could be reused/swapped into the next rental.

Yes. It uses GPS to track speed and location and other sensors to track hard braking, accelerating and cornering.

I doubt that the hardware cost much. The tracker provider is making their money on the monthly service. Besides these are universal kits with multiple adapters for different vehicle makes. After installation the leftover adapters are usually discarded.

A quick search showed the kits are only like 30 bucks. I. Unplugged the device and zip tied the cable so that it wouldnt fall again
