I spoke with Billy Johnson about it recently. Both 75W90 and 75W140 work well. 90 has a bit better cooling capacity but 140 will offer better protection. Both with friction modifier. The 140 will have slightly decreased TBR vs the 90. Both will have slightly lower TBR (like 2.8:1 vs 3:1 for the 90 wt) with the friction modifier, but will make a lot of the torsen grinding noise w/o it on the street.

I do HPDE in my 18GT 10 Speed car and I did a rear diff cooler and put in royal purple 75w140 but it had friction modifier in it so I didn't add any extra. If you push your car the rear diff will get hot so watch the temps on it. If you don't have a sensor in the rear diff cover, just know it will get hot and change fluid regularly is my opinion.

Redline Gear Oil, 75w140, no exessive noise and no temp warnings (car gets plenty of cooldown time between reasonable length sessions)

I'm running Red Line #57104 75w140 non-limited slip (no friction modifier) synthetic gear oil. Red Line #57914 75w140 has friction modifier.

Some info from Torsen regarding axle fluid and friction modifier: https://torsen.com/ask-torsen-oil-choice-questions/

Does the 10 speed overheat? Also, do you change ATF per the owner manual after events? Thanks,

Yeah @Flyhalf has been struggling cooling the 10R80 on road courses.

That is what I would expect. Doesn't the manual also need a cooler?

Thanks,
The MT82 doesn't run that hot to require it. For racing, a trans cooler is obviously a good idea, but for HPDE, people haven't had widespread issues. Diff, yes. The Tremec in the GT350 has a totally different housing and does need cooling.

Installing now a bigger cooler in my 10r80
The biggest issue is
Apparently there is a thermostat that opens at 200f. So on track is an issue.
I swpa my trans already.at 10k.

I have only had trans temp issues on one track and that was at NCM in bowling green. The track is big though and has 24 turns so it works it a bit harder. Up until that track I had no trans temp issues but am building a cooler set up to make sure things don't get hot in the future, or trying to prevent it if possible. I changed the original trans fluid at the end of last year and then after the NCM weekend where it got hot. I has a TSB on the valve body in the trans so ford paid for that fluid and filter. I'll go to my "local home track" this weekend and will see if it gets hot as I'm still waiting on my -8 lines and fittings to come in from summit before I do my trans/oil cooler installation.

Do you guys who track the 10R80 shift with the paddles on track or let the computer decide? Also do you still have the stock trans tune?

I don't have a clue if either of those would make a difference but am curious.

Is the "thermostat opens at 200F" concern that there isn't cooling from the cooler below 200F?

Thanks!

Alex paddle shifts his. I just let the computer take care of mine at this point in track mode. I may try the paddles in the future but I want to get my coolers on and test them before I add a variable to the equation. I'm already changing to shorter and stickier tires so that will make the trans work a bit harder by itself.
