I have a carbon fiber mirror triangle that I purchased used from here in the classifieds that had some scuffing on the leading edge.

I've sanded the entire leading edge down to the bare carbon and now I want to clear coat over top of it and possibly the whole triangle.

Can someone walk me through this process? To include the type of cc to use (enamel, acrylic lacquer, or something else) if I need to sand/prep the rest of the piece prior to clear coating and how many layers and how to prep between layers and finally what to do for the buffing process.

Pics for reference.....

Good to use??

I have no experience with this, but I'd say spray the sanded area and see how it looks. If it looks like crap, sand down the entire piece again and then re-spray.

^^ that was going to be my plan of attack. I can always sand it down to the bare cf and start from there, right!

I was kinda concerned about what clear coat to use, acrylic or enamel and what is possibly already on the piece.

Thanks for your input.

This is some great info...exactly what I was looking for.

When you say......"Tape off the area and use a high gloss clear of you choice (except laquer)"...., are you referring to the fact that because we don't know what type of clear is already on it, it's best to NOT use laquer, but use enamel instead. If that's the case then I may just sand the whole thing down to the bare cf and just clear with the lacquer (I already bought).

Agreed?

Carbon is laid up with epoxy and coated with epoxy. For UV protection, use a urethane clear on top. You just have to scuff up the epoxy a bit for the urethane to bond. It’ll will look dull after a scuff sanding but, once the urethane hits it, it will be crystal clear again.
