Recently just upgraded from a 2016 Mustang GT to a 2018 Mustang GT PP1. Yesterday I turned on my car after being driven about 10miles from home and it made this weird startup clicking noise. It sounded like my engine start was weak. Ever since then when I would turn on my car I would hear the same noise but this time just a single click rather than the first one I heard. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Is this normal and should I be worried? Unfortunately I don't have the first startup (it was like a rattling noise that lasted 2-3 seconds, my friend and I looked at each other after hearing it since it sounded that bad lol), but this is how my startups are sounding now which is less scary but very annoying:

By the way, cold starts so far have been fine.. it's like a 50/50 chance that it happens when it's warm.

Changed my oil and added ceratec today and it still makes the noise sometimes.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated. Would like to know if this is normal.

This may be worthless advice, but hit the ignition switch with your foot off the brake pedal. That way steering column unlock, or other gadgets sequence without the starter engaging. Maybe the click isn’t the engine firing up but electronics cycling on.

If it's not that try a new battery. The stock batteries are junk.

Seems like the dealership recently just changed the battery, was replaced 2022 when I checked two days ago I believe.

Then I'm no help. Mine makes noise when I open the door and again when I step on the brake. When I hit the start button it just starts.

If something is wrong let us know.

Update:
It sounds like engine is weak when cranking. Here's the video.

You are not kidding. My car needed a jump just to go on a test drive. Fifteen miles on the clock. I stalled it at an intersection and thankfully had enough momentum to pop the clutch. When the test drive was over I shut it off and it did not start. Battery was replaced before I took it from the lot. The app showed two alerts and both reset after installation.

That has all the hallmarks of a dead battery or dirty battery cables.

Any update on this? Have you tried swapping the alternator?

Ford called and said they're replacing the VCT solenoid after hearing rattles at low rpms, maybe causing the rattle on startup as well.

No fix after timing chain tensioners and VCT solenoids replaced. Ford buyback process started last week, car has been in and out of dealer since January. Engine rattles got much louder can be heard on decel idle or moving, shaky idles (rpm staying steady though), startup rattle and knock is still there, weak accelerations, bad fuel economy, stalling, ... you get the point. Hoping the buyback gets approved soon.

Any updates? Mine is doing the same thing as well. I’m starting to think of replacing my throttle body.

Sounds to me like the starter. Mine has done this a couple of times. Usually due to a weak battery. Whats the battery voltage at before you start the car (resting voltage)?
