Quick question, is it absolutely necessary to have the heat shield installed? I’m changing out the wastegate, and the heat shield is kind of a pain in the ass to remove and replace. So just wondering if it’s absolutely necessary to have it on there? I do have a turbo blanket I could use, that should help with heat. But obviously cannot use the turbo blanket and the heat shield together. So does anyone think it would be a problem, If I use the turbo blanket and just ditched the heat shield?

I've swapped my wastegate several times and each time is a pain in the ass to get that heat shield in and out. But the turbo is a huge source of heat. I would do your best to try and keep it. Chances are you won't need to do it again. Turbo blankets on these cars can be a pain to install in their own right.

Just buy mishimoto turboblanket, direct fit for eco

I saw a pic of the turbo blanket on another site and it looks like it's a better solution than the tin shield. No idea if it's more or less of a PITA to remove/install.

On the same issue ... has anyone removed the oil lines surrounding the metal shield to gain access to the shield? It would be messy but would make removing the shield a lot easier. The large allen bolts/banjo style fittings at the back of the engine shouldn't pose much of a problem. But the fittings at the front, with the small regular style bolts, might strip or round just by looking at them. Has anyone gone this route?

Those are coolant lines, I just swapped out my FP turbo for the NX2, you will make a bit of a mess when you first pop off the lines but you can put them up out of the way to prevent losing a lot of coolant. I

Sweet. Thx. Do the smaller bolts on the coolant lines at the front of the engine come off easily? I'm considering a blanket to replace the heatshield but I thought the lines were oil. If they're coolant they're not as intimidating. But the small bolts up front still look like trouble.

Mine only had 1 bolt holding the 2 lines on because the brackets overlap each other. There is another bracket that holds the 2 lines together closer to the firewall you need to undo also to make it easier. On your car there also might be a harmonic balancer 10mm bolt that needs to come out.

as much as i enjoy the idea of a turbo blanket, i would be worried about cooking the turbo during a 20 minute track session, even though it is water cooled. frankly the stock heatshield is there for liability reasons (hence the hot symbol), and maybe a bit of heat protection. the 2.0 ecoboost heatshield (pic1) is interesting, in that it sort of encloses the hot side. a lot of talked about ecoboom, but i'm wondering how much of that is related to the exh side being near cyl 2 and 3. assuming a glowing turbo radiating heat in that area would fatigue the part of the block that has been failing. i would really like to throw some inconel heat shielding to go between the turbo and the block in that area. i would also like to create an inconel enclosure with an airgap around the exhaust side, which is why i bought a stock turbo. Don't mind my rough cad model, not sure if i will ever actually make it.
