Yeah, I figured it was a no-go based on previous comments, but looking at the physics of the system the forces are not as wild as someone would think. The shaft for instance, isn't going to be twisted into a pretzel from the low torque required if the door is off-loaded correctly. Anyway, it was a fun exercise. 😄

Randy, your thoughtful analysis of the potential challenges with a wall-mounted garage door opener for your 16-foot wide doors is quite impressive. Your concerns about the twisting forces and weight distribution are valid. Given that the thread is a few months old, I'm curious to know if you've made any progress or reached a decision regarding this issue.
Thanks.

There basically are just Genie or Liftmasters and other branding of those. Liftmasters seemed the best.

I went with a ceiling mount Chamberlain B6713T made by Liftmaster. Thier top model minus video camera. Not interested in their camera ecosystem.

I used the identical spec backup battery from my old Craftsman (rebranded Chamberlain/Liftmaster) instead of the one that came with the new opener since it was just 6 months old and they seem to last a little more than 2 years.

Only two things I liked better about the old opener. (1) it came with a wall control that had a clock and temp display. Liftmaster sells an aftermarket wall control with those that supposedly is compatible with my new opener, but the reviews are a shitshow of failures. (2) the built in LED lights are built into an expensive bottom cover. If they go out, you don't pop in new bulbs. You live with it or pay ~$170 MSRP IIRC for a new panel, although I suspect there are or will be DIY solutions.

Plus side: the new opener receiver is less bothered by other LED lights. Most LEDs interfere with the frequencies used by Homelink, etc. The old opener would not respond to the Mustang Homelink buttons if our LED overhead lights were. I'd have to use the MyQ phone app if those lights were on when I returned home.

Pretty sure he was a bot.

Thanks though. A new garage door opener in my future.
