I have owned probably 20 + cars in my lifetime and I can say that the body panels on my 2016 GT are the thinnest I've ever had. I never park near other cars. I always am carefull when closing the hood/doors. But I've had the paintless dent guy out 3 times to fix dings dents in the doors. One of the them was from my wife simply closing the damn door. It was partially shut so she pushed on the doors which left a fist sized dent in it. (She's not SuperGirl either). I also just had a ding in the driver door near the bottom. No way door could have caused it... must have been road debris or something.

Hell, when I go through the brushless/touchless carwash, the air blowers/dryers at the end of the car wash actually push dents in the hood (Which luckily bounce right back on their own).

Have you guys noticed this?
I guess you've never owned a Honda.

You want thin body panels and crappy paint work? How about my 2006 Subaru Legacy GT Spec B. Loved the car, but it was worse than our Mustangs.

My dad through a m'fing warm chocolate chip muffin at me but screwed up the toss and it hit the door panel and dented it. A MUFFIN dented the door! It popped out, basically took off the inner door panel and pushed it out, no problem. But... a soft, warm muffin.
OK, that shit was funny!:D

You all are familiar with CAFE standards right? Manufacturers are being forced to go to extreme lengths to meet the upcoming draconian standards set by the US Gov't. Do you really think they would be going to aluminum panels if they did not have to in order to cut weight? Its only going to get worse as the standard gets stricter as time goes by.

NEWS FLASH,the 2018 Mustang will now be made out of cardboard to save weight, and 2020 Mustang will be made out of paper, according to the US Gov"t and Ford Motor Company. The new engine line up has also been scaled back, standard engine will be a Briggs/Stranton 18 HP and for the GT a 22 HP will be offered, all engines will run on regular gasoline.

Whatever I need
While the Mustang has a very rigid and heavy perimeter around the occupants, all that sheet metal is just there along for the ride. Quite the opposite of cars years ago with heavy sheet metal but thin and vulnerable A, B and C posts.

I just listened to the latest Motorweek podcast and a comment was made about how body panels in general are much thinner as they noticed it when attaching GoPro cameras.

That's why you don't close the door by pushing on anywhere BUT the door handle or the edge of the door.

Don't lean on the car and it won't dent. Don't apply pressure in a highly concentrated area i.e. hands or small, heavy objects and it won't dent. It's not that hard.

This is all common sense, but it sounds more like the cars are being dented more easily even in scenarios that wouldn't otherwise be considered careless.
