On my way to work, a bloody idiot in an Honda Pilot just jerked his steering and pulled his car into the fast lane trying to overtake a truck. He didnt look, neither did he have his blinker. I was doing 70-75 and he moved right into where I was at 55.

It was cold and wet, I instinctively jerked the wheel left, went into the shoulder and missed the wall by a foot or so, slowed down gentlyto 50 before pulling back in.

Still shaking from it all. Brakes and cars stability was AWESOME and I'm thankful 1) the tires didn't suddenly lose grip as it would have been catastrophic 2) there were no objects in the shoulder. Cant believe I nearly lost the beast today.

Car emerged without a scratch but I'm going to be extra paranoid now. Wondering whether to upgrade the wheels (lighter square config) and get all seasons like AS3's or Conti DWS (winter tires are too much for here).

I am amazed at how well my car behaves in the rain. My truck slides all over the place. I'm glad you're ok.

I really wish cops ticketed people that don't use their turn signals instead of speeders. And OP I'd highly suggest investing in a dashcam for incidents like this; just in case things went badly you'd have the footage to show the other driver at fault.

Amazing he didn't see a bright yellow machine. Most people just don't pay any attention to the road these days.

Examples like this are why I want to get a dash cam. My eventual plan once I save up a little "fun" cash and the wife is ok with it, is to DD on the A/S tires and then pick up a nice set of wheels and sticky auto-X/Fun tires. Since you already have nice (although a tad heavy) summer wheels, you could pick up a set of 19x8.5s with AS3s or DWS06s and replace the P-Zeros with PSS when they wear out.

OP's post is another data point that makes me lean towards A/S tires when I buy new wheels next year. I mean, if 95% of us DD's time is spent on high-traffic roads, then 10" wide tires ought to give us more traction regardless or conditions.

Well yeah, wider on a heavy car will always give you more grip. If you live in a place where it hardly ever gets to freezing temps or snows, most summer tires (outside of the extreme, track-oriented kind) are better in the rain than A/S tires. Pilot Super Sports are ridiculously good in the rain.

Thanks friends. A DashCam will be ordered over the weekend. I already have one in my SUV. I'm going to get a mirror mounted one so I dont have yet another accessory hanging off my windshield (ex: cell phone holder, radar detector).

Honestly, I salute your courage. Riding a motorcycle these days with all the distracted cell phone texting drivers takes a lot of balls.

I know - I was surprised the buffoon did not see my Triple Yellow beast. Regardless, I do plan on getting MRR FS01's 10 inch square setups (285/40/19's). This will be my all year round tire/wheel. Much more grip and 10 pounds unsprung weight savings per wheel! I simply hate the thought of switching and storing wheels and Auto-cross for me is the occasional fun event, nothing serious. I'm debating whether to get Michelin PSS or AS3's for them. The AS3 is a great tire, and might do better year round in Seattle weather than the PSS (no snow or below freezing driving planned). OTOH, it may chunk in auto-cross.

Anyway, all said and done glad both the beast and I are back home safe tonight!

I have driven both the Pilot A/S Plus (predecessor to AS3) and PSS to their useful lives. The PSS was most definitely better in the rain (and obviously dry) than the A/S, but what pleasantly surprised me was that it did ok in the ~30-35 deg mornings of Oct/Nov 2013 and 2014 and didn't get scary at all. The A/S Plus also did not chunk when I took it autocrossing.

Buy winter tires if you need grip in cold temp.

Thats great. And I keep reading how awesome the AS3 is. I had a set of PSS in my BMW M6 and loved em but no doubt they are not the same as a dedicated extreme performance tire or R compound in autocross (but good enough for a novice like me!). The nice thing with the AS is also warranty (I think if I wear them down fast- which I will, I might get credit for the premature wear!?).

I will say this though - if you need an all season tire that does everything very well including snow and very cold (the AS3 does not do snow or very cold well, but I dont live in a place that gets either), you cannot beat the Continental DWS and the 06 version improves the dry handling - which was a bit of a soft spot in the last one.
