Old 5 oh, How do you order plates for a car you don't have? At least in IL, you have to have a car (VIN) to bolt them to already. Is CA different?

I have to ask!

In CA, they don't ask. The plates will come to the DMV office, and when I pick them up I'll have to give them a VIN and surrender any plates that are on the car. I also have the option of simply taking them, not assign them to any car and paying a small annual fee to keep them. I guess I could just put them up in my garage if I chose to. The idea is you own the personalized plates as long as you pay for them. (In CA, regular plates stay with the car owner after owner. I know in some other states, you take your plate from car to car. Not here.)

At CA DMV, you can't breathe the air in the office for $4.50, LOL. The "environmental plates" as they are called cost $49 a year on top of the regular license and registration fee, which for a new Mustang will run maybe $400 a year. Really.

That's a steal...mine are going to be around $1k for the first year of plates! They go down in price as the car gets older....but not fast enough. Still paying around $300 for my 3 year old Fusion

Then you start higher and decline faster than we do. My 7-year-old MKZ is still well over $200. I get pretty envious when my son tells me he renewed his Ram truck AND his 94 Mustang and got change back from $40, in Idaho.

Dang...I've contemplated purchasing a cheap bare piece of land in New Mexico just to have an address to title my cars to  Probably would save me money over time, but the real reason for the thought is that NM doesn't have the fugly front plates...I just don't know if I want out of state plates on my cars as the cops target those more for tickets!

Changed my order to an automatic after driving the 2014 6sp. That makes my early plate decision available now as I can't use it:

Did you order 64 DNA or 1964 DNA?

When you get it please show us a picture-->

I'm struggling.

I'd have to give up "YANKEES" on my truck, Transfer "HUSKERS" off my DD (LE will be my new DD) to the truck, because the Wife will not give up "THE DOGS" on her SUV, so I could order 1964 DNA, My favorite for the LE.
I was limited to 2/3 numbers and 3 letters, so couldn't fit 1964 on the plate, so ended up with 64 DNA

I would have thought for sure someone would have suggested HIDALGO since it's about a famous race-winning Mustang (an actual horse). Maybe not enough people saw the movie to make the reference worthwhile.

How many miles on that 93 LX? I had a new 91 LX 2.3.
