Funny but someone just reported at the Mustang meet that on his 2020 40K miles he was getting misfires and backfires about 4K. He said dealer did an oil change the week before and shorted it 2-3 quarts . They said it caused the issue. Did a refill of proper amount of oil and he s driven the car hard for a few days with no misfires.
It cost you nothing to check it.

I can see that. Doesn't the variable valve timing use oil pressure to adjust?

VCT variable cam timing.

It does use oil to actuate the VCT. Even if the oil starts to lose a certain amount of viscosity the VCT will drop out of timing randomly.
