This is what I was doing wrong. Not holding the brake fully down THROUGH the last time I hit ok. It isn't enough to hold the brake until it says it's ready. Keep holding it when the timer appears and when the lock occurs you will feel some rumbling through the brake pedal and then the timer starts and you are good to go.
