I checked Crutchfield. To upgrade stock radio it will take 250$ + the cost of stereo in accessories to put aftermarket stereo in.
OK would I get good sound for less to add a small amp to existing stereo?

Unless you’re looking for a fancy radio with lots of bells and whistles, I suggest adding a sub and an amp to start with and see how you like that. If you do like it, you can add a second amp, sound processor and replace the door speakers and tweets. It’s going to be pricey to upgrade even retaining a factory radio once you start adding amps, speakers and a sound processor. There’s really no cheap way to get good sound In these cars.

Not sure which stereo set up you have, but I have the premium my Ford touch with an aftermarket sub and amp. The quality of sound depends on my source, Bluetooth with ultra HD on Amazon is terrible, regular radio isn't too horrible, and USB media is best. The quality of USB vs Bluetooth is insane, Bluetooth is super quiet. I'm thinking eventually of doing the sync 3 swap(not terribly priced from hextall) as I'm willing to bet that plugging my phone in directly it would sound best when using Amazon music ultra HD. I have a friend that has android auto in his jeep and demo'd the ultra HD plugged in and the sound quality and volume was incredible.

To upgrade your headunit you need one of the following three things if you got an 8" screen already (SYNC2 or SYNC3):

- Maestro RR
- Maestro MFT1

or

- Metra 99-5840CH

or

- Scosche ITCFD05B

The last one doesn't really work if you got dual climate controls.

If you got the 4" Screen theres still two options:

- Metra 99-5838CH
or
- Scosche ITCFD05B

or you do the SYNC3 conversion.
For all of the above options you still need a new radio.
