But you could bypass that amp all together and run something decent right? Not a lot of room to work there.

Just grab the signal from the deck and use a LOC to power an amp mounted wherever

I'm a radio idiot, but I want clear sound. I have the 9 speaker Shaker, and it's the WORST car stereo I've had in a car since a 1984 Chevy truck with only the center speaker in the dash. So that's not saying much.

Do I need to replace the front door speakers and the tweeters? I'm hoping to leave the back alone, and primarily looking for mids/clarity, not bass.

I found replacing the door speakers and tweeters improved the sound, but I feel the stock equalizer is really holding the speakers back. I feel the EQ band width is too large, and it is hard to get the highs and mids right without pushing too much mid. I ordered a 7 band EQ and will be integrating that into the system between the head unit and the amp. Hopefully it will work out and improve the sound.

The back speakers in the 9 speaker are a joke, I replaced mine first with a set or precision powers, and it instantly changed the whole car, way more bright and volume

You have very mods/highs in the rear stock just a cardboard woofer with a tiny magnet

2-3 weeks later I changed my fronts, 3x as much work and while it helped, the difference was not as much as the rear

The amp is where the factory EQ happens, so it's just going to continue to clip the signals, in order to get clean full signal, you'll need to tap the signal pre amp, into a DSp or EQ and then run an aftermarket amp to your speakers.. Your 7ch eq pre factory amp isn't going to do you any good

Main difference between 9/12 is 2 way rear deck speakers and a sub, so by replacing just the rears you get 70% of the 12 speaker upgrade

I'll be doing an amp in fall to go with the speakers I already installed

In some cases that is true, but I find that is the case more often with factory amplifiers that receive the head unit signal digitally. The Ford amp receives RCA level audio via wires separated per channel. Per the wiring diagrams, the only thing going into the amp is 3 sets of noise cancellation (which apparently do nothing in the GT?), a remote signal on, and FL, FR, RL, RR RCA level inputs. I'm convinced the equalization happens at the head unit. Of course it is all skewed due to the factory settings to "get the most out of the factory speakers", but I'm still going to play around with the 7 band EQ pre-amp.

I'm not at all adverse to installing an aftermarket 4 channel amp in place of the factory amp, but I'm going to try this route first and see how it goes. I have all the connectors and I will be making harnesses, so there will be no drilling or splicing required, so changes will be simple. I'm actually considering wiring up my harnesses without integrating the noise cancellation, see if that makes any changes as well.

I'm thinking of buying a set of JBL GTO638's for the rear deck. Can someone tell me if these are a good choice? With so many out there, I have no clue. I have the 9 speaker system with no upgrades. Thanks!
