Upgrade headers without removing the CAT?

I don't know if that defeats the purpose or not - but I'm just wondering if there's anything to be gained by upgrading the headers and catback - but keeping the cat. Is that even possible? Sorry if this is a noob question.

One of the stock cats are made into the exhaust manifold. Every design for aftermarket headers are going to get rid of stock cats and replace with aftermarket cats.... not a bad question at all. Easier if you see pics, I think Ford was calling themselves 'slick' in thinking no one will dump the cats now! LOL W-R-O-N-G !!

Ok so are there CARB legal headers that include aftermarket cats? The weather here in CA is great but the smog laws suck ass. And yes I know we don't have to smog for five years, but I wouldn't want to have to replace headers to stock every two years afterwards. The CAI I can handle. Headers, no thanks

Most aftermarket cats are not smog legal because they'll still require a tune. The Kooks "green" cats I believe are smog legal and claim to not trigger a DTC however, we've witnessed where these still needed to be tuned due to triggering a trouble code.

We have provided a lot of customers in CA with aftermarket headers and cats, from experience I can't say if they are smog legal or not. My guess is they're not but I would also state that I've seen guys pass inspection with a catted setup.

you can def pass the visual with the hi flows, but you will def need a tune imo

It is not just Californication, it's Federal Law and Regulations. I know some states do not even perform a gas test so owners rip them out regardless of the law. Pretty hefty fines if you get caught (big if) for the car owner and the install shop. Guess you need to decide if it is worth it or not.

This is correct. The EPA under the Clean Air Act:

"Section 288 – Enforcement: (b) TAMPERING WITH VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROLS –

(1) Section 203(a)(3) (42 U.S.C. 7522(a)(3)) is amended to read as follows:

'(3)(A) for any person to remove or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this title prior to its sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser, or for any person knowingly to remove or render inoperative any such device or element of design after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser; or

'(B) for any person to manufacture or sell, or offer to sell, or install, any part or component intended for use with, or as part of, any motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine, where a principal effect of the part or component is to bypass, defeat, or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this title, and where the person knows or should know that such part or component is being offered for sale or installed for such use or put to such use.'
