Unlocking tuning devices

I have a Livernois MyCalibrator tuning device that I won't be using anymore, and emailed them asking about unlocking it so I could sell it. They said for $300 they'll do it.

Any tuning whizzes out there know if it can be done without paying half the original purchase price??? A buddy at work also has a Mach 1 and it seems ridiculous that he couldn't use it for his car.
