Hello everyone,

I just want to first state that I am relatively new to the car scene so my knowledge for cars is very beginner level. This past summer I had saved enough money and purchased my 2017 GT in Race Red with the Roush Stage 1 Supercharger kit already pre-installed. Currently I have purchased 2m Fabrication catless headers (i realize the fitment issues) and want to install them as soon as possible, but I have been told that I will need a custom tune as there will be a CEI from the headers. What I am currently having trouble understanding is the whole tuning process (what i need, need to do, etc), if i do need it, and how will the pre installed tune from the pre-installed Roush supercharger will affect the whole process.

Thank you

Welcome to the Mustang world!

So with the headers, you don't tech need a tune for it to run. If the car was tuned prior to you getting it, you could just install them and go.

But... tuners because of the EPA cracking down will not shut off CEL's anymore for the cats. Just not a liability they want to take and we don't blame them. All tunes will be CARB compliant now even in States that do not have testing because it's Federal.

But, with that said. swapping to a catted header system with a custom tune will help midigate any issues of having it. I have been a big fan of the Kooks headers with the GREEN cats. 100% compliant and will still flow nicely. Boost friendly too. It will cost more yes, but you won't run into the issues you will have. Plus mich better fitment then those ones.

As far as tuning, with so many good options out there, I recommend checking out our Tune Shop. Lund Racing, Palm Beach, Ortiz, etc are all available. This is with either a SCT or HPT device I have used Lund on my cars for the past decade and always been happy. NA and boosted setups that have never given me any issues with lots of happy miles.

Let me know if I can help out with anything else.

Thank you for your reply!

So from my understanding, I will not be needing a custom tune due to the pre-installed tune from the Roush Stage 1 supercharger that was installed prior to me purchasing the car? Won’t installing long tube headers require a custom tune? Or does that only apply to bone stock ones?

Thank you

If your car still has the stock cats, then the tune on it likely accounts for them being there. If you switch to catless headers, you will get a CEL. You aren't going to find reputable tuners willing to turn that off in the tune any more. Other than the CEL, you shouldn't NEED a custom tune for the headers but you may pick up more power from headers + tune than just from the headers alone.

If you want to avoid a CEL, your best option would be to research o2 sensor spacers but I can't directly vouch for their effectiveness.

Long tubes do not need a tune. They will remove restrictions and just flow better, making more power. I do think a tune from Lund for your setup would be ideal, they will make more power than the roush tune.

SO, with a custom tune, they will leave the emissions/smog portion of it alone. When you add headers, the front wideband 02 sensors will adjust as needed though. You can still run the risk of a CEL because of the rears seeing a different reading then factory.

Hello and congrats on the car! You will love it.

As for the headers, we are able to tune the car but we Will not turn off the CEL you get from them. The car will still run just fine if you have this code as it is emissions related. of course, we always recommend a GESI or Green Cat from Kooks.

The factory Roush tune is conservative and a custom tune can definitely wake the car up and squeeze some power out of it!

If you have any questions about your build, give us a call!
