is there a point, long tubes, x-pipe, etc that tunes are required to keep operating correctly? I would like to start looking at beefing up the exhaust some, but do not want to touch tunes just yet.

X-pipe/H-pipe, catback and tail pipes don't need tune at all, they mainly change the tone.

Long tube headers need a tune to make use of the available increase of power and torque (10-15% depending on RPM).

so, if I do not do long tubes, no need for a retune atm then? can I do them without a tune and just not gain full potential?

For the other exhaust parts - yes, they shouldn't require any tune. I'm no expert on long tube headers, it's possible they'd give a Check Engine Light without a tune, but that depends on the exact type of green cats/cats/decat, sensors etc. And considering their high cost, just for the sound, kinda doesn't make sense, leaving the pretty big power increase on the table.
