How dangerous is a tune and what engine parts will I risk by getting one? I want one but I'm seriously afraid of voiding my warranty and breaking something I can't afford to fix right away! Your help is greatly appreciated

The chances of a tune causing an issue are slim provided you go with a good tuner. The chances you are denied warranty if you have an issue with your drivetrain after installing a tune are almost a certainty. Bottom line is if you want to keep your warranty intact leave the car alone.

Ima just quote myself. But typically when you have a failure in an engine, from what i've seen from failure threads in this forum and others, is pistons and rods. Most of the time they put holes through the block. You're basically looking at a whole new engine, maybe just a block and it's corresponding parts

As the above poster mentioned, the tune is unlikely to cause a failure. However if there is a failure, I think it would be very hard to prove the tune didn't cause the failure. With my GTI, it was tuned and had warranty work done. But I got lucky, I also didn't install the aftermarket parts either. I bought it with everything already done to it. It's all hit or miss. With Ford, it looks like they take a strong stance against tunes.

Any warranty you have will be offered through the aftermarket company to include FRPP, Roush, Saleen, etc... You are playing with fire when it comes to your factory Eng/Drivetrain warranty when you are tuning the engine out of Factory specs. You may get lucky as some have, and get covered under Ford's warranty, but it is never guaranteed.

The only guaranteed tune which would be covered under a Ford warranty is something offered directly by Ford upon sale of the vehicle. Similar to what Porsche does, they offer a sport tuned package when you build your car. Even then some manufacturers reduce the warranty time and mileage. Ford does not currently offer such a power package.

If you're dead set on getting a tune and exhaust for the car, you should get comfortable with the aftermarket warranty. It is likely you will need it if you have any malfunctions. That said, a catback exhaust is one of the few "safe" mods you can do to your car.
