I got a quote on some tires/wheels and they came with TPMS sensors.
Are these needed for the track? I would rather not pay the extra $200 for them.
I use a digital gauge when at the track for proper pressure.

Also, how good are Nitto NT05s? How do they compare to Toyo R888Rs?
How do they compare to my stock MPS4s?

No, not needed. Will get a TPMS warning light after about 20 minutes, but doesn't affect anything else

You would have to reprogram the tires to the car each time unless you had a friend who scanned your existing sensors and code matched the track tires to match. That said TPMS trips at 27psi. If you are talking of drag racing track applications (you didn't specify what track type), most tire pressures ran on DR's or slicks at teh track are at 20psi and lower. So the TPMS would be alerting to a low tire pressure all the time.

FWIW - Some automakers have tied tpms sensors into the ECU so that the car goes into limp mode when a fault is detected - (Dodge is doing this currently). To trick the TPMS monitor system people pull the sensors our of their rear tires and then mount them in a steel or PVC piece of pipe with the ends capped, and then pressurize the sealed pipe to 32psi. That is then placed in the trunk in a secure location and the TMPS monitoring system is therefore satisfied regardless of what tires are on the back of the car or what pressure they are running. It's an option for consideration for anyone bothered by presence of the idiot light active on the dash while at the track.

Your Pilots are most definitely better than the NT05. The R888R is much stickier than both.

But...I cant imagine that the car goes into limp mode when the TPMS is triggered.

TPMS is quite handy if you drive to and from the track on your race wheels, and it could save you on-track if you get a flat.

I had a small leak at the valve stem on my race wheels and the TPMS warned me before the tire was flat enough to be damaged (so the sensors have already paid for themselves on my car.)

Maniditory? No, but a useful piece of gear and worth the cost IMHO.
