It's about time to change out my tires and I was wondering what is the widest you would suggest going on stock 20" rims?

Agreed, if you want to retain the handling, a 275 would be the widest.

Additionally, when you look at the approved rim widths for each tire from the manufacturers, the a 255-to-275 are the widest listed, moving to a 285+ needs a wider wheel, though that's not to say that other have installed larger tires on their stock wheels.

Right, l'm likely going to be using 9.5" wide rims and would prefer to go with 275's. But due to numerous factors, one being to maintain as close to the 27" stock tire heigth l'll be going with 285/35's. The minimum rim width recommended by the tire mfg l plan to use.

What are the closest tyre size in 20" to maintain stock ride heights compared to the 19" PP wheels? Don't forget the extra inch rim diameter !!

I'd have thought on 20" 275/35 and 305/35 would be the best?

Gibbo,

If you use java, this http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html is a great tool to compare tires. You can put in the stock tire specs on the left then put in the desired on the right and it will both show you physically the change and give you the numeric differences.

If you don't use java, another tool that works but isn't quite as helpful is http://www.net-comber.com/tirecalc.html

That is brilliant, so for 20" wheels the best size is:

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
Front:
255/40-19 4.0in 13.5in 27.0in 84.9in 746 0.0%
275/35-20 3.8in 13.8in 27.6in 86.6in 731 2.0%

Rear:
275/40-19 4.3in 13.8in 27.7in 86.9in 729 0.0%
295/35-20 4.1in 14.1in 28.1in 88.4in 717 1.7%
OR
275/40-19 4.3in 13.8in 27.7in 86.9in 729 0.0%
305/35-20 4.2in 14.2in 28.4in 89.2in 710 2.7%

For me most important thing is sidewall size because the S550 I think looks really poor with skinny sidewalls, so it is good to see that even with a 295/35-20 the sidewall is only 0.2" less than stock in the rear and we need sidewall to keep that muscle car look and put those horses to the ground. :)

PP runs 255/40R19 and 275/40R19. They are different sizes. I am thinking about running 285/30R20 and 305/30R20 is that gonna be an issue?

I would have to run like a 305/30 in a 20" and that's just a rim busting harsh ass ride so it's not happening. I'm just going to go with a square 285/35-19 (26.9") and a better sidewall heigth. Having 3.31 gears l don't want to go above 27" (stock) tire dia.

30 profile on anything less than 325 width looks wrong on these cars, you need some tire buddy.
