Just 20k miles on my cabriolet, so almost time to replace the stock 255/40/19 PZeros. Will likely get the Michelins everyone recommends but want to go a little wider on these rims, which I love. Summer car, spirited driving but no racing. Not much of an upgrade guy, but have always looked to go a little wider on stock rims if possible when changing tires. Any help would be much appreciated.

On an 8.5" rim I think the widest tire you can go safely would be a 255.

You should be able to go up to 275 at least maybe 285 with the right tire. I know the nitto web site will tell you how wide the wheel needs to be to go with the tire width, I'd imagine the michelin site does too.

Not on an 8.5" wheel. Anything more than 255 is an improper fit, even if it's possible. Some 265/40 tires may fit if they run narrower, but in general, 255 is the limit. Stuffing more tire on a narrow rim is bad for tire wear, handling consistency, and does not have a larger contact patch.

I'd pick up some 255/40R19 Firehawk Indy 500s. They are a lovely street summer tire and definitely beat the Michelin in value. The PSS/PS4S are great and the best, but not 40% more expensive great.

Not a chance on 9's you can use 265 and some 275 but not on a 8.5

Well I have 2 vehicles that disagree with you. Running 265s on 8.5 wheels on a 17 mustang and running 295s on a 9 in. wheel on a F150. And both are just fine according to the tire man. Web site. Now are they the optimal wheel size, no, but they are within the range recommended. So yes, you are right, the best tire size would be 255 for an 8.5 wheel.

I can only go by what the manufacturer says the tire will work on. But yes you are correct, they are not ideal for sure. Oddly enough, AM sales wheel/tire sets with 265s on 8.5 wheels. At least that is what they sent me.

265/40/19s on your ‘17 Mustang? Can you share pics?

255 35 R19 continental ECS is probably about as good as it gets.

The 35 aspect ratio is a bit better for handling and acceleration.

My opinion...stick with OEM sizes but go with a better tire. Michelin A/S3+ are my favorite all-season. But considering that you are coming off P-Zeroes, you could throw darts at a board and pick a better tire (unless it hit P-Zero again). :cwl:

If you're thinking of upgrading your rims, I'd just go up to a 9" setup all around and fit the car with 275's squared.

https://www.lethalperformance.com/s...ustang-v8-gt/2015-2017-ford-mustang-gt/wheels

But like TopJimmyCook said, changing the tire compound will be the desired route for more grip while sticking with the 8.5" tire size.

Michelin makes a brilliant tire but they charge you for it. Consider some Nitto's as well https://www.lethalperformance.com/nitto-g2-255-35zr20.html.
