You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. If you had a 56 mm stat in your 2015 then it was the wrong one. The 2015-2017 use a 61mm.All I know is the 56mm fit my 15 Mustang GT, it came straight out to be put right into my 17 & didn't fit. The picture shows the t-stat sitting in the housing with the gasket which just falls right through the opening.
I think the confusion is coming from the wrong size t-stat from the start, the 15 ledge in the housing came in further for the 56mm to sit proper with gasket but isn't the right size. This is all I can come up with that would make sense.
I have a picture showing the 170 t-stat clearly marked with a 56mm & my factory t-stat marked with a 61mm.
Here's what I think. The 56mm fit in your 2015. Of course it fits. It's smaller than 61mm but I bet it was passing coolant by it the entire time. You remove the 56mm from your mustang and now notice that It doesn't fit your 2017. I will bet $$ it sat the same way (too small) in the housing of you 2015 and you just didn't notice it then.
In your picture do you have the entire housing removed? Are you putting in the stat backwards? I don't understand how your getting that picture with the stat so far down the housing like that.
This is a picture I took before changing my stocker out to a evenflo. Both were 61mm. Then changed out for a reische 170. Also 61mm.
Here's a shot of my stock stat in my 2015. You can see 61mm marked on it and also properly installed. That's how they come from the factory.
The proper thermostat for your car is a 61mm reische 170 stat, also known as FORD-50.
