Did you ever get the secondary tensioner issue sorted out?

In the process of pulling it apart- but with the passenger valve cover off it appears the secondary tensioner does its job..timing cover off the coming days. Will report

could it also be something ‘deeper’- the rattle cant be valves, right?

Alright so- some updates. Everything looks perfectly fine really. However, on the passenger side (where the tapping sound comes from) I can easily depress several lash adjusters by pushing on the rocker with my finger. On the driver side none of them move, they’re very stiff.

I replaced all lash adjusters last time with the updates FP ones, no clue how there can be a difference in pass/driver side…any ideas?

Man that is strange. No evidence of broken valve springs on those lifters?

No- they all look great..can’t imagine I did something different on the driver side when I replaced the lash adjusters last than on the passenger side…

Cam caps went back in the same locations too?

What about the tensioners? I read that they need to be released innocent apply proper tension. I saw a video a while back on how they just pushed down on it with the handle of a plastic hammer to release it. I looked for it recently, but couldn’t find it again.

Watch this video here and see if it may me applicable to you in your troubleshooting. A little further research also indicates only soaking them is needed, rather than pumping them up as shown in the video.

While cleaning hydraulic lifters before installing them is generally good practice, it's not necessary to fully "pump up" or pre-fill them with oil before starting the engine after installing new valve springs; doing so could potentially cause issues by holding a valve open during initial cranking and can lead to low compression; instead, a light oiling or soaking in engine oil is usually sufficient to ensure proper lubrication upon installation.

Key points to remember:
  • Pre-soaking is preferred:
Lightly soaking new lifters in engine oil before installation helps lubricate the outer surfaces, but avoid fully pumping them up.

  • Potential issues with pre-pumping:
If you fully pump up the lifters before installing them, they might hold a valve slightly open when the engine starts, causing issues with compression.

  • Proper cleaning:
Always clean the lifters thoroughly with a suitable solvent like mineral spirits to remove any manufacturing residue before installation.

  • Engine priming:
Once installed, the engine oil system will properly fill and pressurize the lifters when the engine is primed and started.

Yes thank you- was thinking about this, but it’s just weird that several lifters on the passenger side are soft whereas all of ‘m on the driver side are firm. I’m thinking perhaps some oil blockage or flow restriction on the passenger side? Not sure how that’s possible though..

Ok so- scorching on exhaust camshaft and scratches (can feel with nail) on journal- all exhaust lash adjusters soft, intake side adjusters firm…potential damage material in the lash adjuster gallery…

question now is- how can I clean/unclog the gallery without damaging or pushing debris further down the engine?

Man this is scary stuff! I’ve seen a few people post stuff like this online. I’m almost afraid to pull mine and have a look. No noise or anything, but man is it definitely a huge concern after having seen this several times. I think your cams are toast. I also feel like your best way out of this will be to buy billet cam caps and send the heads out to have them line bore honed. I think this will smooth everything out and give you a clean canvas for new cams.

@Deca will you please post some really good pics of your collapsed lifters (top, bottom and oil feed/drain hole)? I want to see if they look similar to a Harley Davidson lifter. Those can be disassembled by removing a retaining clip on top and disassembling it. There are videos on YT to show the disassembly process (if they are in fact similar).

They’re similar to the ones in the video you posted, so already primed a few last night, thanks for sharing. Happy to share pictures later if you want

Seems like I need a new head then..anyone know where I can find a ready-to-go head instead of all these ‘semi-finished’ ones (whatever that may mean)?
