I am also not happy on how Ford marketed this whole thing. The talk was that Android Auto and CarPlay would be available on Sync 3, but it was never made clear that it would be something of a later upgrade... so, technically they were not lying, but I don't see the point of making such a big deal about a new system and its fancy new features, when this would not be release until a year later...

And as others have mentioned, the Apple folks will needle a cable. Before I go bad mouthing Ford for this, remember that Apple enforces all sorts of restrictions. In my work we see that when releasing products, it is always hurdles and more hurdles with Apple. I guess that is why Android is... open source :-)

that also right. you can connect android auto over bluetooth. you just need once to connect using normal micro usb cable to recognize your mobile tats it
I am going to try this tonight. I have a 17 escape and have android auto. I thought you had to plug in to get it to work. When I plug in auto starts auto.
On Carplay I was told by the salesperson that the usb plug on the car 2016 has to be changed for it to work. Cost would be 100 bucks. Again take this for what its worth.

I just took a look, and here's the note...

I bet the CarPlay upgrade is a special cable. Sounds like something they'd require for licensing, or DRM.

**edit - According to Android Central, the 2017 Escape is the first vehicle to get Android Auto integration. My local dealer has some 2017 Escapes on the lot, and they've been dealing with my Sync 3 issues (unsuccessfully). I might go over there and speak with the GM about it...

Well ain't that a sigh of relief. :)

It don't start when I connect to bluethooth. I have to plug it in. I will start the apps tonight manually and see if it works. I am not impressed with it so I don't plug in that often.

I can not get android auto to come on when using Bluetooth. I have to plug in. Unless someone can tell me how to do it. I tried everything I can think of last night.

I watched a video demo on the Android auto sync3 update for the 2017 fusion hybrid. The person said that Bluetooth doesn't not work and that you have to connect via USB.

I don't think it is that big of a deal for the functionality it brings but it is a little disappointing. Maybe a future update will add Bluetooth connectivity.

My old car had a stereo with Android Auto and you could only use it through plugging it in to the USB. So it's not just Ford.

My previous car had CarPlay and a special cable was not needed. I used a standard Apple Lightning cable. Am I to believe they somehow modified CarPlay to only work with a proprietary cable? Seems very unlikely. Maybe the hardware upgrade they were referring to was an iOS device that is CarPlay compatible, not all are.

Oh f'ing great. I was told by sales and Ford CS that all I would need was the software f'ing update and it would be free. And now they want me to purchase an f'ing hardware update. What a nickle-diming pile of BS.
Same here - what's up with the BS that we have to now spend money for hardware - and exactly WHAT hardware is needed? Why is it such a damn secret about this Apple CarPlay with Ford - when I see commercials DAILY from nearly every manufacturer that has it already in their vehicles for public use?????

And HOW MUCH is this supposed hardware component going to cost us??

Ford should grandfather anyone in who has already bought a 2016 prior to the CP roll out and install the damn hardware piece for free!

Hardware is yet to be announced.. I don't know why Ford is so tight lipped about it. Ford has been so slow to the Car Play/Android Auto game its ridiculous.. 16s should have shipped with it.

I think it will be the USB hub that has to be replaced.. the hardware is only for Car Play.. Android Auto wont need it. They may have a special price for the hardware but Ford most likely will have the part on backorder status out the gate.. Ford is one of the worst when it comes to parts delivery.

But we shall see.. I hope sooner than later.. but it will probably be later.. Ford originally said once the 17s start hitting the lots they will push out the update.. but we all know that didn't happen.

I hope its soon.. but we will see when Ford gets off their ass.. Fords ego these past few years has been enormous.. and it shows in everyway..
