Nice find. Function over form, exactly what this fatty needs!

Yes. Patent says the cast magnesium is 1/3 the weight of aluminum but also 1/3 weaker in terms of strength, hence the "lattice" arrangement in an attempt to make up for it.

Perfect for when that engine bay fire gets out of control.:)
Magnesium is highly flammable, especially when powdered or shaved into thin strips, though it is difficult to ignite in mass or bulk. Flame temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys can reach 3,100 °C (5,610 °F),[10] although flame height above the burning metal is usually less than 300 mm (12 in).[11] Once ignited, such fires are difficult to extinguish, because combustion continues in nitrogen (forming magnesium nitride), carbon dioxide (forming magnesium oxide and carbon), and water (forming magnesium oxide and hydrogen). This property was used in incendiary weapons during the firebombing of cities in World War II, where the only practical civil defense was to smother a burning flare under dry sand to exclude atmosphere from the combustion.
Hopefully the effort extended to shave weight on this component extends across the board.

If it's 1/3 the weight and 1/3 weaker, than make it 33.3% heavier to have the same strength and still be lighter than aluminum.

Looks like active aero. Somebody here was right about this and you know who you are!

Well I doubt you’re talking about me, but I mentioned it back in August , on page one of the specs page thread.

I was thinking hydraulically actuated, but I it said electrically actuated in the patent, didn’t it?

They can use a sketch of a "vehicle" when detailing a specific patent. The patents may have been too early to use GT500 sketches, Ford may not have wanted to tip their hat, or maybe they were indeed intended for use on a GT350 but were cut from the list.
