Hi Guys,
Just wanted to ask a question relating to an ongoing warranty issue. I have been told by the dealer (and have read) that if the lower u-joint/coupling in the steering column that attaches to the steering rack binds in one direction and moves freely in the other direction it can cause a clunk/knock noise during turning and sometimes moving straight. Note, the u-joint was taken off the car and seen to move freely in one direction and not in the other.
My question is this, can the u-joint transfer its binding in one direction/move freely in the other through the steering rack and into the strut to cause a knock/clunk at the strut, strut mount or for that matter any other parts beyond the steering rack? The noise fyi is on the drivers front side.
BTW, the u-joint is being installed shortly. Struts, strut mounts and drivers side sway bar end link have been replaced to initially try to correct problem. Sound comes and goes...not predictable although a little more predictable when making slow right turns.
Thanks.
