So I installed a small subwoofer and ended up disconnecting the active noise cancellation mike. I find it kind of bizarre because the car actually sounds pretty much identical without the mic, just with a little less depth and more of the fun/random turbo sounds at lower volume. Having that system in place leads people to believe that the engine has no growl but in fact the engine does have some natural growl, more than I’ve heard on any other 4 cylinder. Seems like a lot of money/time spent by ford for little to no benefit. Just my two cents!

I don't believe disconnecting the active noise canceling mic eliminates the "active noise control" system entirely. Active noise cancellation is meant to reduce road noise; the system uses the mic to measure ambient sound, then pumps the same sound through the speakers 180 degrees out of phase. It does a fair job of making the car quieter on the highway, but it interferes with aftermarket subwoofer operation because it senses subwoofer output as road noise and tries to cancel it. Disconnecting the noise cancellation mic eliminates that issue.

But active noise cancellation is only one part of the active noise control system, which also includes fake engine noises pumped through the sound system. Unless you turned those off as well (you must connect to the car's computer via the OBDII port with special software) then the growl you are hearing is fake. I've turned the system completely off in my car and the engine is eerily quiet.

Way to burst my bubble lol. I thought when I pulled fuse 5 as a test the sound was similar to when I pulled the mic though. Doesn’t fuse 5 totally kill the anc?

According to my owner's manual fuse 5 powers the subwoofer amplifier, so I don't think that will disable the active noise control system either. The only way to turn off the fake engine noises (that I'm aware of) requires a device connected to the OBDII port that allows you to write to the configuration data in the car's computer.

I've disabled it using forscan and I noticed a difference. It's my DD< so i was happy to have it quieter int he cabin.

I used Forscan to turn it off because I tapped the rear channel to feed my subwoofer. That made some impressively annoying sounds with a 10" subwoofer.

The only difference I noticed was not having the subwoofer make weird noises any more. there may well have been other differences, but I couldn't identify them.

If you only disconnected the rear mic the front speakers will still have anc. There’s another mic in the dome light console for the front speakers. I put an aftermarket amp on front and rear and only disconnected the rear at first and had some crazy sounds coming from the front speakers when accelerating.

It’s just the dome light in a vert I think. Road noise seems the same. Its the quieter turbo chatter I hear more now, like when it’s just getting ready to spool up and rpms are still low but there’s a bit of torque on the engine. I like hearing them. I think ford was trying to downplay that the engine is a 4 turbo. I say embrace it, it’s an awesome base engine.

believe it or not there are 3 in convertibles. One in the map light and behind the lh/rh rear seat backrest. you have to remove the plastic trim section were the rear seat belts are and they're under there.

fkin annoying, so basically my only option to turn it off is to use forscan? Can anyone link me to a quick tutorial somewhere?

Thanks! The one behind the map light killed the sub noise so I’m happy. Although I ruined the clips on the map light assembly pulling it out (tried to go slow) and a new one is 550$! Experimenting with ways to reattach lol harder than it sounds..
