Just entering a destination is a horrible chore. The voice recognition only works half the time. When it doesn't work, you have to do that idiotic backwards address enter, and it's so slow it takes forever.
it is not a "chore" at all. So simple even a caveman could learn it in 2 min. What exactly do you find so bothersome about it?

nav used to be one of my requirements for my vehicles. my last several cars had them.

that was until i discovered an app called Waze on my phone. holy crap is it superior to any in-dash nav....

it's awesome, since we never have to spend extra money on crappy nav systems ever again....

my wife's car has nav, but we still use Waze instead of it.

How so? Please explain.
Well my phone literally auto-completes the address for me. And the display, even while smaller, is much better. What takes 2 minutes in the car takes 2 seconds on the phone.

And the traffic is actually up to the minute (and even more amazing if you use WAZE).

I too found the NAV a complete pos when I 1st got the car. It has become more user friendly after I read the manual and took the time to use it instead of getting frustrated and going back to my phone.
Exactly my friend. so many here find learning something new to be too much to handle it seems. There are other ways to do things that don't involve staring at the little plastic box in their hands that they stare at all day.

Waze is so good I've considered just leaving an iPad in my car at all times just for this.

I read the manual. It doesn't make the voice recognition any better, or make the typing faster, or remove the idiotic backwards entry\search.

So don't own a smartphone do you, lol
yes I do. I just don't rely on it to do every little thing. I have a great navigation system in the car, with a much bigger screen, and it doesn't involve me having to deal with my phone at all while driving.

its not about the learning curve, they are clunky, slower and just not the best. Even the shit that's in the bmws I service is garbage. Built in navi just isn't great in any car.

What fionic said. Even the 08001/08002/08034 area isn't all that tough to learn, nor is it much trouble to map out routes to more distant destinations so that you get your own spatial feel for where 'there' is relative to 'here' and at least a vague internal idea of how to get there.

Are you really in that much of a hurry? stop trying to "beat the clock" and just slow down when typing. And please don't tell me your phone recognizes voice any better. I know it doesn't.

waze has saved me countless hours of commute. it finds the fastest route home during rush hour. it will even re-route you if traffic builds up through your original route.

i use it every day for my 100 mile round trip commute. it's smart enough to ask you "are you on your way to work" when you fire it up at 7:30 AM, so all you have to do is tap YES. same thing at 5PM on the way home.

How about stop telling people what to do?

So basically you're suggesting he buy an entire new car to get a better NAV?
