Are you saying to download a map? and read it just as we did before navigation came along? on a very tiny phone screen? If I understand you correctly....That is a terrible idea my friend. If I am wrong in what you are saying...My apologies.
Yes, you download the maps to your phone so you don't need to have reception to navigate. It works great.. been up and down the east coast.

And again, my screen is 5 inches... not tiny... stop being so dramatic. The screen is larger than many external navigation devices sold. If you still have a flip phone, then that might be an issue.

edit: just read what you asked... I see... you don't understand what is being said, that is why you are against it. LOL... I did not say print the maps.... I said download them to your phone, as you would an application. You can download the maps and then turn off cell signal and your maps will still work (it works off gps, not cell signal).

The argument against using a phone for nav falls very short on all accounts... every time this convo comes up. Wires, no reception, small screen... lol... honestly...

Being dramatic? I don't get that. But anyway...I did not mention anything about printing the maps either.
You are saying it is conveinient for you to read the map on your (Tiny), yes tiny phone screen, as opposed to just having a real paper map which is much bigger, and easier to read. with None of the advantages of voice prompts, as Navigation has. And, none of the "downloading to your phone. Sorry. but that whole concept seems more to me like going backwards as far as taking advantage of the technology that is out there for you. You are using the technology available to you, just to download something that you can get without even having this technology.
sort of like taking a map, and "copying that map to you phone" so you don't have to carry that original Map with you...LOL

Only someone who need their glasses subscription filled would call a 5 inch screen tiny. And I guess car screen will look tiny as well. lol... at any rate, no argument there. Done with that.

Your description of the maps is far off. You have not done it and don't understand it so it must be "wrong"? Guess I never thought that people don't understand it and that is why they are against it.

Anyway, you download the updates to the maps and they work just like google maps online. It is all basically the same thing... you don't notice a difference in the maps. The maps on your phone are even updated at a much higher rate than the maps in your car.

You get all the features you would with online maps... nothing is lacking. It stumps the hell out of using the car navigation. Period.. and I'm done (this time... I'll return when the next nav thread comes up... because nav sucks in these cars. LOL).

If you have a serious question about downloading maps, hit me up in PM. More than happy to help.

Some people will refuse to grow with technology. It's not our problem. Let them use their inferior antiquated nav software, which is practically obsolete by the time it rolls off the assembly line.

Why can't I just hit the button and say "navigate to home" and have it start navigation to my home.

If I am correct, then why not get a road atlas, and read it in a much larger text, so you can see it? Or a simple road map for the region you are traveling in.
I think he is implying the maps for the phones use a data connection for downloading certain things. If you download your trip/map you need to worry about areas with no data connection

You can. Say this with a slight pause between words:

Navigation -> Destination -> Home

This assumes you have set up your home address as the 'My Home' favorite

Bad idea to store your actual address. Use a non-residential address you can get the rest of the way home from without needing navigational aid.

I can't imagine myself talking at (to?) my car like it was another person. Swearing at it, sure (this being more likely when there are more things on board to get frustrated with).

I actually have mine set to the local police station a few miles from the house.

Good idea. would freak out any car thief trying to locate your home after stealing your car huh? I have my "home" set to the supermarket about 2 miles from home.

If someone is already in my car then they could just pull my address from the vehicle registration that I have to keep in the car.

You bring up a good point. although I don't keep my registration in the car (I keep it in my wallet), There are other items in the glovebox with my home address on them (paperwork, etc.).
I never really gave that any thought till I read your post. Good idea to keep that stuff somewhere else.

As far a I know, you only have to be able to present your registration card on demand. Whether it's normally kept somewhere in the car or in your wallet (perhaps with your driver's license) is irrelevant.

In NJ you can request a duplicate registration card when you renew it. Presumably this is to allow two main drivers (typically husband and wife) to each keep their own copy with neither copy having to be kept in the car.

Any aftermarket navigation unit could be a specific smash-n-grab target, so you wouldn't want "home" in it to be your real home either.

My mistake. In Texas, we have a sticker on the windshield that is the registration. It is my proof of insurance that I keep in my wallet.
BTW, the sticker gives no useful info as far as finding out where the person lives, unless of course they have access to the DMV.
