Thanks to this thread I now know about these things. Cool. So do they just make your Mustang look more like a GT500 or do they protect your body panels from road crap? or both?

I imagine they do both. Keep rocks from hitting in front of your rear tire etc.. Here is a pic of a GT 500 sand has the same style so definitely not ass backwards.

I did the drakes, for appearance only.
The real use is, for people to step on exiting passenger seat.
They are not to step on, strictly for looks and road debris. On high lift vehicles such as trucks, yes they are to step on for entry and exit and are structurally made to hold the weight.
