Hi folks,

New member and looking for some ideas! Car is a 2017 with 5000 miles on it. I have an intermittent service charging system warning light that comes on and goes away after 30 seconds or so. This can happen repeatedly on a 30 min drive. I took it to the dealers who said they couldn’t replicate it. I asked for the keys back and made it happen in one minuet. They said it was an alternator error code and put in a new one under warranty. Problem never went away and dealer has no clue what to do. Wants to keep the car in for a week or so....

The symptoms are as follows:

-cold starts are normal
-hot starts the car drops in revs to around 500 and nearly dies. Shortly after the service charging error will come up.
-warning can also appear in hot stop start traffic.
-weather has recently dropped to near freezing which sets off the error code constantly in the cold morning commute.
-volts are normal
-car has sat for 2 weeks and started perfect with no drain.

What can I suggest to the dealership to look at? Anyone else experience a similar problem that also wasn’t the altinator?

FWIW, I stalled my Mustang once (let the clutch out thinking it was in neutral) and I got the same error message on the screen. Seems to be related to the low RPM stall condition. Likely a red-herring.
I would be checking for other trouble codes and perhaps finding a more competent dealer.

Other ideas... are you using ethanol blended gasoline in your car? I've had some bad gas or accumulated moisture in my Ford Fusion, and it will sputter and run like dog shit almost stalling out at low RPM. Do you run the car almost down to empty before refilling?

You think the main issue is the weak hot starts? I wasn’t sure if it was 2 separate issues. But you might be right. Unfortunately my choice of dealers is extremely limited. That’s why I’m trying to arm myself with as much info as possible. Fingers crossed!

Pop your battery cover off and see if the terminals are corroded... apparently there’s an issue with many newer Ford’s and excessive battery terminal corrosion. If there is corrosion if could be causing electrical glitches.
