I am going to stick with synchros for now, because of my budget. This little venture has been a little expensive 😄

But if/when it breaks, I'll most likely go to a faceplated trans.
Unfortunately, it seems that all tranny work is expensive. I found that out rather quickly during my D4 rebuild. I am hoping like heck it holds together, especially once I start putting it through its paces.

I have really enjoyed your experience and insight. That thread has been helpful for a great many folks. Without our initial PMs back and forth, this little project probably would have never gotten off the ground.

OP you mentioned using Arduino; are you using it to program a sensor you’ve built or are you using a micro-controller from there to send out the signal for the gear position?
I ask because I’m trying to wrap my head around what signals are being sent out by the factory sensors.

I used Arduino for proof of concept, but now using a custom module based on findings with the Arduino.

Tons of progress. I hope to share a video very soon that shows the translator running through its self-check and running through the gears on the digital dash while the shifter stays untouched.

Currently focused solely on shifter position sensing for the input to translator. Everything else works. Probably a few weeks away from being happy with that, but lots of progress.

Sorry for limited updates.

Here is a video of the TREMEC Translator in self-test mode. The car was in the air so we could plug everything in underneath. It is a bit of a pain, because the exhaust has to be dropped and the transmission sagged quite a bit to get to that SGS connector. More will be coming. Video is NSFW because of language, but I didn't want to edit the audio, because I wanted folks to be able to hear that the shifter isn't moving. The shift sensor is actually unplugged and the translator is plugged in using a jumper harness as seen below. Video under pic (NSFW- language)

I received some feedback that said it is hard to believe the gears were changing because of some little box, and that me or someone else was carefully moving the shifter in the first video.

So without further ado, here is another video showing the shifter just chillin' while the gears change on the 401a dash. You can even see where the camera comes on for reverse at the very end of the video.

This is getting so close to being a reality, I'm really excited. I hope those of you following along are getting stoked as well.

Maybe people don't understand, the gears in the transmission *aren't* changing. The gear that the PCM thinks it is in is changing. The report to the PCM is now coming from the new controller, not the original that is mounted to the transmission

Bravo, this is big! :)

I'm retired. I was a technical trainer and training curriculum development specialist for GM.

Now I am just an old cranky dude that likes to make things work in a way that manufacturers never intended. 🤣

Retired from years of developing sensors for powertrain control. Now I develop control systems for model monorails that strangely enough use some of the same hardware and software as what Mike is doing. ;)

Here is my development area, apart from the monorail does this look familiar Mike? ;)

Very cool, thanks for the update! I don’t think people realize the possibilities this opens up for the 2019+ cars. This could give us the ability to put any trans we want in these cars without losing anything correct?
