It's retro(old) to describe the new Mustang as "retro".
Awesome commentary...I think "retro" gets thrown around so much now that the context gets confused, and the term has taken on the meaning of "bad" and "not modern".

"Retro" is hackneyed :)

I agree, 'retro' is too misused today to have any tangible meaning. The car will always have a certain look but that doesn't mean it has to be old looking. For something to be truly retro it will have to directly copy an old design, think restomod but built as a new car or some classic Converse sneakers.

Retro or not, Ford made a few videos saying that with the S550, they started with all of the usual retro or heritage cues and slowly stripped away one by one to see which ones they could remove while still being unmistakably Mustang. Evidently, the C scoop and floating quarter window didn't make the cut.

I would tend to agree that they got away with the most they could have while still being instantly recognizable as a mustang. I also think that we could see these elements put back on with the refreshes. If development started in early 2009, Ford must be 4-5 years ahead and have the refreshes planned for the most part.

A few ideas for how they could do it....

I think the lower character line along the side could begin to curve up into a more modern and chiseled c-scoop. Also, along the lines of the S197, the side skirts could go from black to body colored in subsequent refreshes. Although I actually really like the coke bottle effect from it.

I actually don't like the body colored side skirts. It makes the 13/14 look a little fatter.

I've posted this elsewhere and will post it over and over again. The '05 Mustang was a reset button to bring the Mustang back to its roots. The car will now continue to evolve from there as an icon should. Think Aston, think 911. The benefit to all is a Mustang in step with the times that honours it heritage. Win win all around I say.

^^ This. I hope you're right. I own a Fox and even I don't see a Mustang when I look at it. The 911 strategy would be ideal.
